My Solution to Overheating While Tethered

tethered internet is the only internet access i have at the moment, so heat has become an issue. i've solved it in some not-so-practical ways such as putting the phone in the window on a cold day or setting it on a box fan lying flat. i wanted something a little more practical so i made this:
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g9...a/IMAG0001.jpg
it consists of an extended battery back, a fan from a 486 heatsink, and a 12v AC adapter i had lying around... cost me a total of $18 on ebay.
i just drilled holes for screws and cut a 1.25"x1.25" hole for airflow.
as you can see, i scratched the back a couple times while cutting and drilling, but this wasn't made for looks :)
sorry i don't have any pictures of it on the phone, but my phone is the only camera i have!

Nothing new, the idea has been done by me and a few others.
Cheapest way is to place your phone over a blue ice pack in the bag. Put some foil between the phone and the pack to cool it quicker.

Man, I can't believe your phone gets that hot. Seems like it should never get hot enough for you to have to do any of these things. Mine never gets very hot. I must be lucky. NOT!

so was that sarcasm? heavy cell radio usage generates quite abit of heat. the reason for keeping it cool is for the battery so it will keep charging.

when i'm tethered via cord, it takes a little while to overheat and stop charging, but if i'm tethered via bluetooth or wmwifirouter, it overheats in a matter of minutes.... with this, it hasn't overheated yet... so far so good

I have an aluminum heatsink from a coprocessor it is about 2.5 x 3.5 x.25 thick, I just lay the phone on it and it works fine, uses no power, and easy to leave in the laptop bag in a pocket. An old vid card heatsink could do the trick too!

Where did you get that from? I've seen the little single can fridge shaped ones, I've also seen the flat ones that you set the drink on (might be the best for this application, just set the phone on it) but I've never seen a two can with a shelf model. Does having it inside reduce your signal any?

Re: My Solution to Overheating While Tethered

it's actually a 6 can any which way. I got it from MtDew points or something.. it's got the logo on the door.

the signal is fine, at least since it stay's cool it doesn't get into the self destruct overheat mode.. lol
you can kinda see at the top where there's a seam, the whole back half is metal, and the front area is plastic. I've only notieced an issue with wifi if my laptop gets 'behind' the metal.

I've been debating to take it apart, but I like having cold dew handy.

I was almost tempted last night to just make some holes in the plastic cover over the chipset, where the microsd card is, it will pop up a litte on the battery side and a simple breaze keeps the phone cool,, lol it's kinda fun to watch the temp go up and down every time you blow on it.

Re: My Solution to Overheating While Tethered

I usually just put water in 2 zip lock bags and double bag it to avoid accidents and sit the phone on top lol... yea I know not the best idea but it works.
