I don't think the camera has enough fps, irda is 9600bps i think

While we can't see it with our eyes, CCD/CMOS cameras can pick up wavelengths beyond our range. To test this you can try pointing a TV remote or anything that uses an infrared LED to communicate at the phone camera. On my XV6700, IR LEDs come up as bluish hue. In short, while they can pick up the wavelengths, the extent that they can interpret the data is questionable.
