Old Skool one-handed TXT messaging! :D

3 Attachment(s)
Are you TIRED of almost crashing because you feel obligated to respond to some TXT your woman sent you (or man) while you are driving? So you try to respond but you only have a FULL QWERTY (YEA!) hardware keyboard or software version or some hyped up keyboard that still requires the use of TWO HANDS no matter how COOL it looks? Well for those of you in this situation, I have the SOLUTION!!!

Now you can txt/type like you did way back in 1985 when your cell phone was just a phone with txting and you could ONLY txt using one hand!!! First you want a SIP KEYPAD or PHONEPAD. Here is a GREAT ONE!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=426281
Also there is a cab that makes the keypad default to T9 rather than ABC, which is what I use.

Also I recommend using the Touchback cab, it makes your phone vibrate when you press one of the keypad buttons! Only takes up 4k!!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=478407

I have attached three cabs that I use. But you can check out all the options via the links I provided!

Hope this helps! I had my titan for a long time and would spend a lot of time on the road and had to ignore a lot of txt messages because of my dilemma. Wish I knew about this 9 months ago!

Have fun txting! :D

I believe that all of out TP come with this keyboar already. And the vibration is added by touch response.

I might be mistaken, but my TP has had it since day 1.

I'm using might 4.17. When I choose the phone keyboard, I can only press numbers. I tried changing it from ABC to t9, but I still can only press numbers. Anybody else having this problem? Any fix?

I text one handed all the time using the Cootek TouchPal KB & T+

I never use the hardware KB in my TP, I find TouchPal with T+ is MUCH faster......

That is correct, all three of my TouchPro's came with these sip KB's as standard equipment, you don't have to add them.....

I would try to avoid that myself.

We had a horrendous accident here last year where five High School girls where killed in a head on crash with a tractor trailer (the car burst into flames) on their way to a graduation party at a Summer cottage.. The cell records showed later that a text had been sent from the drivers phone 30 seconds before the crash............

Oh ok. Thanks. that never occurred to me until you said it just now. What would I do without you? Yes sir I will not txt so as not to scare you while I'm driving.

isn't TouchPal the one where you have to swipe your fingers different directions to activate different characters? If that is the one I'm thinking of I cant do it. Never seem to get the swipes exactly right....unless there is another way of using it?

Ahh yes and reading a post about something the phone already does is really helpful and enlightening. Such a thoughtful and helpful thread, you are a tribute to your gene pool, you should stand proud of this thread. If I were you I print it out, frame it maybe even attach it to your resume for all to see. I am so inspired by this thread that I am going to see if I can rent a billboard and have it put on there for all the world to see. How does "Petermg mental giant of our time" strike you? Hold your head high, and text away while driving, your a serving mankind with great honor! :headbang:

lol i text while driving all the time. i see nothing wrong with it. if you do, fine, but i'd rather text somebody, rather than call them sometimes. the no texting law is almost as stupid as the seatbelt laws.

Glad it was of some use to you!! I didn't know about this so when I found it I was very excited! As for the haters, these are guys with no women in their lives either NOW or EVER. Yeah, they have NEVER had a girlfriend, lol, or they are below the drivin age! HAHAHAHA! Those who have girlfriends know what I mean.. those who don't.. continue to type away angrily at their keyboards in search of purpose :)

Exactly!! So do many people, guess it's just these goody-two-shoed, raised-by-their-granny folks who drive with their eyes on the road AT _ALL_ TIMES and their hands at 10 and 2! LOL. Gimme a break. Who are you guys foolin'? Too many losers willin to jump on any bandwagon as soon as they IMAGINE an opportunity. Go ahead guys.. since it's basically all you have anyway in sense of purpose. In fact.. make a drivers training video and send me the link to it on youtube!

for me personally its more about the fact that i have an 8 month old son. after being a father and having someone elses life in your hands you start to notice things. things like almost everytime i see someone swerve out of their lane, when i drive by them 90 percent of the time they r on their cellphones. its not about being cool for me but its about the fact that most people are not good/safe drivers anyways much less when they are trying to use thier phones.

peter i am sure you can text and drive and have never got in an accident, nor have i. in my opinion its irresponsible to myself, my son and the other drivers on the road to not be focused as much as humanly possible.

just my 2 cents

I was having a problem with using this number keypad for texting. I would push the button and no letter would show up. I figured out you have to also install a language pack (see post 6 in the xda thread) or this thing is worthless.

Thanks for the post though. I'm on the final MightRom 4 build and really was missing my T9 numeric keyboard.

How about we NOT have a thread about texting while driving...cmon are you serious. Too many idiots on the road as it is. Now we are teaching them how to text while driving!](*,)

None of this worked for me. Can't change sip and phone keypad ALWAYS types numbers instead of letters...

Re: Old Skool one-handed TXT messaging! :D

All you bleeding heart responses need to start an organization, GATAD, Geeks Against Txting And Driving, and show you really believe your own preaching. for the rest of you who took this for what it IS, a How-To for setting up one handed txting, not a tutorial for reckless driving, YOU'RE WELCOME! :D

petermg 08-12-2009 02:26 AM

Re: Old Skool one-handed TXT messaging! :D

Another note, I am actually making the roads SAFER by giving people who drive and txt with two hands, a free hand to keep on the wheel! Self-righteous preachers ever vigilant for a preaching opportunity.

30 seconds after? i'm sorry, but in case i'm mistaken... the effects of texting shouldn't linger half a minute after the text is sent. attributing that to the crash is like saying that chemo kills cancer patients.

Re: Old Skool one-handed TXT messaging! :D

One handed typing is useful everywhere, not just while driving. We all are guilty of using our phones while driving. No matter what anyone says it is still not a good idea. I am guilty of it myself. I am not as crazy about that as one person I know, who sends emails to our organization telling people when they get an email on their phone they should pull over and read it and then respond. I'm driving along, I get an email and I read it about 2 words at a time and if it is urgent I call the sender using handsfree bluetooth goodness, if it's not urgent I just wait. It's not like anyone is going to get upset if you tell them "I was driving so I waited till I got to the office to respond". Maybe you're not driving erratically but if someone ELSE is texting or surfing the web and swerves right into you and you don't see it coming and you get shoved into a phone pole at 60mph and leave behind a family, was answering an email or text really worth it?

but anyway, good information about keyboards...:)
