Another great option is CallWave. It is free and you get a short TM of the voice mail and it is sent to your email as a wave file.

I guess I don't fully understand what visual voicemail is. My big problem is I hate listening to the messages. I've heard that Alltell will give you your voicemail in text message form where you can just delete it and read it without calling into the stupid *68 number.

Anything like what I've described for verizon?

I just noticed that the HTC Touch Diamond that was released on Verizon yesterday comes with visual voicemail. It's virtually the same hardware (Less memory and no hardware keyboard) ... I would think that they should have a new release for us touch pro owners soon.
