Touch PRO ##DEBUG# & RADIO questions

Is there like a wiki or something on ##debug# on what everything means? I'm off of work and looking to test out every radio to see what gives me best results.

Also I have a sprint TP on Sprint, would i be able to flash any radio ie: USCC, Verizon etc... or do i need to stick to the sprint ones?

I don't know the answer to the first half of your question, but for the 2nd half you can flash any radio that you want. The one that most people find the best and myself included is the sprint radio v 1.11. us cellular came out with one yesterday but i haven't tried that one yet.

im currently on the sprint 1.11 and i only get like 2 bars everywhere and it drops signal all the time and my DATA speeds are 400kbs with EVDO speed tweak haha. i live in milwaukee, wi a pretty populated busy city too):

hmm.. it asked me for a password... (##debug#)

Re: Touch PRO ##DEBUG# & RADIO questions

With ##DEBUG#, heres what you need to know for the sake of testing radios.

In the 1x view, which is what it defaults to...:

RX Power: power level in dbm received from the tower. The levels are displayed as negative (-) numbers, and levels closer to 0 are better.

RX Ec/Io
: signal to noise level, displayed in db.. lower numbers are better again.

Those are the two important ones.

Going to debug info on the bottom, and switching to HDR. HDR is aka EVDO (data only)...:

RX Power: same deal as above.

RX Signal Strength
: Similar to ec/io above, but is the inverse... higher numbers are better (stronger and more clean signal).

Active Set Pilot
: The current evdo pilot youre connected to. Each tower has 3-4 pilots... usually corresponding to what side of the tower you're feeding from. You should see one number in this blank only. If you see two, your phone is suffering pilot pollution, and you'll see degraded speeds.

Requested Data Rate: the negotiated rate between your handset and the tower. This is not necessarily the speeds you will see, as you're limited by the tower's backhaul, however this displays the maximum rate than can take place between you and the tower. Highest rate, coupled with highest RX Signal Strength, the better faster and more reliable data session.

I'll provide more detailed information if its needed, however, this is the basics you'd need to know to get the best service possible. :D

You're welcome. :)

don't mean to hijack this thread, but is it supposed to ask you for a password when you ##debug#?

Re: Touch PRO ##DEBUG# & RADIO questions

it didn't ask for my password so i dont think so

Nope. Your MSL isnt required to go into fieldtrial mode, as there are no settings to change, only things to view.

Where do you enter this? I just flashed a new radio and don't think it is any better but am not sure.

I think it's about 50-50 between that & the telus.

I tried both & the performance was virtually identical, so I stuck with the telus as that was the last one I tried..........

yeah weird. when i was on atr rom or mighty it didnt ask for password but now i'm on juggs, it's asking for password and i tried everything!

Nah this happens on MightyMike ROM..
Try 183729

Upgraded to MightyROM 5 and had the same problem getting into FieldTrial.

Osva's suggestion of 183729 did the trick! Thanks.

Re: Touch PRO ##DEBUG# & RADIO questions

What are considered decent figures under 1x if you have weak signal (0-2 bars)? I'm trying to figure out if my late txt/missed call/delayed VM issue is possibly due to a bad radio on my phone (I doubt it, but I want to eliminate possibilities).

Right now the figures when I'm in my weakest signal area are something like

-100 (approx Rx Power)
30 (approx Rx Ec/Io)

...but I'll have to recheck this when I'm home again.

In an area of perfect signal (right now) they're:

-71dbm (Rx Power)
13 (Rx Ec/Io)

Re: Touch PRO ##DEBUG# & RADIO questions

The first set of numbers is atrocious.

Lately in my basement apartment (usually my worst-signal area) I get around -80 dbm RX power, and my S/N is about 8, using the Telus radio. That's not the world's best, but it's a hell of a lot better than the numbers I got with the stock Alltel radio.

I'm 98% positive you can find a radio that provides you better results. I mean, I don't know, maybe you got those figures while testing from the bottom of your iron-clad Bat Cave and whatever you have is the best, but I doubt it. That S/N is ****ed.

The second set is ok, but I wouldn't consider it "perfect signal." You can do better, get your hands on a few other radios and see what you can come up with.

Thanks for the opinion - however I have already flashed to the latest Sprint radio, so your advice leads me to suspect (though I can't be sure) that I may in fact have a HARDWARE problem. I'd like to get more takes on this though.

Sprint coverage enters something of a hole in my residence, but in my area overall it is decent to very good. Wish I had another TP device to compare to.

Re: Touch PRO ##DEBUG# & RADIO questions

Just to be completely clear, have you tried radios besides those from Sprint? Usually hardware damage to your phone is going to manifest itself through crackling/static during calls, fluxuating volume levels, able to hear but not be heard, etc. Not just weak power levels and high crosstalk. I'd go through all 9 radios available to you (if you haven't) before investigating that aspect.

I suppose I should try more, and probably will. But my phone is a refurb, so I wonder why this one should seem to have these issues so often but not the first new one I had, nearly as much.

And there are a lot of variables. If it's not a hardware problem, I find it odd that the issue is so bad with this TP since other phones I've had here got calls and txts largely problem-free. When I switch to roaming the problem seems improved or gone, so the worst answer may also prove true: Sprint just may not cover my particular small area well enough. Then it's time for an Airave or who knows what else.

Well why do you think it asks for a password in ##debug#? i tried entering my MSL# and that didn't work.

Edit - OOPS... The old read the entire thread before you ask boo-boo. Sorry

why not just execute the program on windows folder? FieldTrial.exe

Here's a download of a spreadsheet describing what the settings in FieldTest mean: http://www.4shared.com/file/82540573...oy_Manual.html

Just wanting to be clear here. You actually mean higher #'s are better right? As in closer to 0.

I currently have a verizon touch pro. Is it better to run a sprint radio on it to get better signal and battery life. If so.... If i install a different radio will in screw up the current ROM on my device?

it might be better. you have to try them all out to see which is best for you. it will not mess up anything with your current rom.

like i said, you will have to try them all out to see which works best for you. the results vary largely based on location. so, what works best for me, could work horrible for you. there are 12 to choose from. see here http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=74422
