Best IM program for TP?

i just want to get people's opinion about what the best IM (AIM, MSN, etc) program for the touch pro is. i've tried palringo and beejive but both have a problem where if you put the phone into standby via the button on top, they stop sending/recieving (and eventually disconnect)... i know that s2u2 has a "blank screen only" option, but it majorly kills the battery life...
so i guess what i'm looking for is any IM program that supports at least AIM and actually keeps me online and able to recieve IMs while the phone is in standby

thanks,
Randy

P.S. i know about AIMs SMS feature, but i'm not a huge fan

*edit* i did do a search, by the way. this topic was brought up once and was never resolved

what's wrong with the one that comes with your phone. OZ

Re: Best IM program for TP?

does the same thing... disconnects from the service whenever the phone is in standby.
the worst part is that none of them actually tell me that i've been disconnected... i'll pull out the phone and send an IM, but the person never recieves it...
for everything i've tried, i have to exit the program and reconnect before i can send and recieve IMs again.

basically, i just want something where i can be on aim and readily able to send or receive IMs without a hassle...

well, i'm not familiar with it, but i know tons of people on here rave about palringo. Have you done a search to see if anyone else has this problem?

personally, i use palringo, and it works incredibly well. i dont see any issues like u mentioned ( i still recive messages even is my screen is off) and it supports most major services and have alot of handy features.

I love the voice chat option, sometimes you cant type so u can send a little prerecorded message and the other end recives a link to play. and sending pics is a breeze.

try it out. Hope that helps.

this gives me the same problem. i recieve no IMs while the screen is off and when i turn it on to send a message, i'll press enter and it will say "sending"... and never get past that point

Re: Best IM program for TP?

I have to +1 for Palringo. When I have it on, I get messages even in Standby mode, and supports all major IM programs. If you're having trouble w Palringo, it's gotta be on your end or some setting you don't have set up correctly.

Re: Best IM program for TP?

Beejive will destroy your battery if you keep it signed in, keep that in mind.

Palringo will cost some battery, too, but if you already have something like push e-mail which keeps your data connection up all of the time, you'll hardly notice the difference.

Palringo doesn't stay connected reliably though.

i say palringo is the best. . .i never have those problems when screen is off. ..

only time i had that problem when screen is off is if i have phone connected via WIFI and thats because turning off the screen disconnects you from wifi internet.

I never get alerts when my phone is in standby and I receive a new message.

Another vote for Palringo here. And, if you install it, join the PPCGeeks group.

Re: Best IM program for TP?

i think that a lot of problems we have is based on some of us using a Blackberry and/or friends using it. to my knowledge (as limited as it is), no service other than Blackbery has an "always on" connection. and there in lies the problem. it's not necessarily the chat software but it is for sure the way the phone is connecting that creates the issues we have. so as nice and infomational as these threads are that talk about the best IM program, the results are very scued based on the connection each user has on his/her particular carrier.

I was just about to say that

+1 for nimbuzz it does a lot more things and it also groups your contacts unlike a lot of those other programs

You can also send files and receive

agree 100 percent. i started with palringo, got the job done but not as efficiently as i wanted it to, switched to nimbuzz and am very happy about it

Re: Best IM program for TP?

You can do a registy tweak or just use diamond tweak to have WIFI stay active in standby just like Data does

i played with palringo all day today... for the most part it would stay connected, but here and there i'd get disconnected and when i went back to the accounts tab it would say under AIM "Connection Attempt Throttled"...
any ideas?

Re: Best IM program for TP?

I have used PalRingo and it works well. The bad thing is that if you close the chat, it doesnt save a log of waht was going on before...That is a bad thing for me.

Using Beejive, I noticed that this doesn't happen and the GUI is a lot better. BUT, the memory footprint of the program is WAY bigger than the one of Palring...Thus, I have a trade off between the programs.

I have tried fringe, but I don't remember exactly what I thought about it, I think I told someone that it was better than Palringo though.

UPDATE:

FRING uses about half the resources of Beejive. I will test Palringo In a bit.

UPDATE 2:

Palringo Uses 215K of memory
Fring uses 1390K of memory
BeeJive used about 2900K

This should help determine how much batt life they will take away, I don't think any of them use a lot of CPU power.

beejive has the best interface for me so far.

Re: Best IM program for TP?

Well this might help. If you start up the IM program and hit the home button. Go to the task manager and hold down on the IM program and make it exculsive so that it won't cut off when the phone goes into standby mode or you tap the x button to exit the program. It will always run in the background. I do that to all the IM programs and seems to work.

Re: Best IM program for TP?

Using palringo I got about 9 hours on casual usage. It was in startup and I forgot about it. I usually get about 12 to 14 hours on a charge without it running.

Re: Best IM program for TP?

I've been using Fring for quite a while now and have been very happy with it. Yes, it uses more resources than palringo, but it's actually a VOIP client first that just happens to have a very good multi-protocol im client built in. The VOIP is skype compatible and works ok, but I mostly use it as an im client. They've also built in an add-on structure that supports stuff like facebook, twitter, etc. The WM version is a bit slow to get new updates, but it is very usable. Oh, and free is good...

Re: Best IM program for TP?

There is actually an AIM 6 client for PPC, but it is pretty resource-intensive. Agile Messenger is also good, but not free

palringo for best battery life.

I wish it had a 'accept new messages from contacts only' option though

Re: Best IM program for TP?

Palringo is the best for battery life for sure, for GUI Beejive. Beejive has the audium or osx look to it, very nice.

Re: Best IM program for TP?

:headbang:IM+ for me. It works wonders. Just keep it in the exclusive program list so you dont accidently close it out with all the other stuff when you go to purge unnessesary programs from running.

Chat with award-winning IM+® within AIM®/iChat, MSN®/Windows Live™ Messenger, Yahoo!®, ICQ®, Jabber® Google™ Talk and MySpaceIM regardless of location and mobile operator.
Lifetime License, all updates and support included.
