If I want to use a Sprint TP on Verizon..

I don't even have a Verizon account yet. Would I have to first get a phone from Verizon (I would get a free one), and then switch over to the TP or can I just give a Verizon rep the ESN from my Sprint phone and have it activated on to Verizon after I do the software changes on the phone (Sprint->Verizon)?
