Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
Yeah, once its come loose, it comes loose easily again just by pressing the case under the battery where the cable runs. I've been pondering ways to stiffen up the area under the ribbon cable to prevent that.

Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
Did you actually create this tutorial or did you find this somewhere? I have reason for asking in case your wondering...

Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
That's my hand in the pictures and that's my bed the phone is laying in bits on if that's what your asking. I used my Nikon D40 to take the pics. If you look closely you can see the fur from my cat on the bed ... stuff gets everywhere. Now I'm wishing I'd brushed the bed off.. how embarassing :)
http://www.planetgallifrey.com/mypic..._cat_small.jpg Yes, I put different sheets on the bed. Sue me for doing laundry now and then :P Yes, she's fat, I know. |
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
I'm a sprint tech that opens these phones all the time and I'm here to tell you its definitly a design flaw, and any good tech knows it. The issue is that Spint AND Manufacturer have to admit to it being a flaw before they would take any real action to replacing the units with something else. Companies like HTC, Samsung, LG- ones that have WAY too many phones in their lineup- will takes MONTHS or even YEARS to admit to issues with devices. This is so that they will have a new unit out to replace it and can say "the unit is no longer under production, thus we cannot justify a mass recall and fix them" It happens almost every time and never fails, especially with HTC & Samsung.
We see at least 1 per day come in that is fixed with a tiny bit of thin cut electrical tape to hold down the cable. I will also say, its worth opening your brand new one and fixing it now, because it eventually will come loose, not to mention that it only takes about 2 minutes to do with a T5 and guitar pick. |
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
Ok, well, I've done this a good amount of times now, ribbon is definitely secure.
When you slide the phone open, the lights still come on, but when I push any buttons, the backlight doesn't come back on. Also, if you turn the screen off and on, it doesn't light back up. Basically, it'll only power the backlight if I were too slide the keyboard open. Still, either way, dead keyboard. I guess...I'm just incredibly unlucky. Not to mention the fact I'm hacked on the VZW, so I can't even buy a new one cause they closed the loophole to activate...so upset. |

Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
Ask HTC to buy a replacement keyboard + ribbon cable and tell them you don't give a crap about their $h!tty warranty.

Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
There's a guy on ebay that sells sprint branded parts for the touch pro. He has a keyboard/lcd kit for like $65 if I recall. He won't sell just the keyboard though, I asked.

Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
okay so i just had a heart attack because my keyboard stoped working, i had the other sypmtoms before it totaly turned off but i thought it was due to my custom rom. anyway my phone is off the track on the right side, could you possibly post pictures of the slide assembly and possibly instructions so i know what im getting in to thanks
|
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
Yeah, it isn't terribly difficult to get apart. The slide mechanism is near the center if I recall. I'm not off till Thursday though so probably won't have time until then.
|
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
TheDoctor, how is your tape job holding out? I'm probably going to try and do mine shortly.
|
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
I had to replace my keyboard again two months into a new unit. This time, I told the tech to check the ribbon cables and he confirmed that they came loose. So he ordered me a keyboard, installed it, and taped down all the ribbon cables this time. Hopefully it'll last longer than two months, but I wouldn't count on it.

Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
Mine keeps popping loose still. I haven't found a good way of keeping the sucker attached. I'm tempted to superglue the darned thing.
|
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
Well, no go for me :(
Taped everything up, made sure it was pushed in firmly. Light comes on but I get no key response :( Looks like I have a nice Diamond now... |
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
This tuturial has saved my life!
I have been through 4 touch pro's because of keyboard failure, and I was on the verge of just going to a curve. This fix worked like a champ, thanks alot. |
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
Has anyone considered using a hot glue gun on the connections? I haven't used one in delicate electronics myself, but I've come accross a number of 'glued' connections in my son's toys. For the most part I'm pulling play dough out of the interior but those connections all looked real tight.
I ask since I've picked up a TP off ebay and the tape fix isn't working for me... |
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
Actually i considered that very solution but I think my cable is torn so It'd be pointless in my case. I'm just gonna swap for the TP2 when it comes out.
|
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
Thanks for posting this, I'm tempted to crack open my TP to see if this will remedy the keyboard failure instead of getting a crappy refurb like so many people here seem to be getting recently.
This ought to be a sticky, mods. |
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
There. Now I have stuck the sticky. LOL
|
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
thank you to all who have contributed your knowledge in this thread....removing the battery cover and pushing on the battery helped to fix my keyboard at least temporarily, and im pretty sure in the future and ill have to employ some of the other techniques listed.........i really dont want to deal with refurbs after listening to all the horror stories on here =D>

Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
Ive been tryin to find a direct source for the Touch Pro keyboards that isnt an ebay store. The only place I can seem to find is the ebay store for $39.99 each. ANy ideas where else I could purchase any?
|
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
I haven't seen any other sources. I suspect some of the third party sprint authorized repair centers might be able to sell them to you. I think however if they're gonna discontinue the TP that they might become scarce. We'll see what happens over the coming months.

Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
Awesome! just when my keyboard just died for 2nd time I didnt feel like going back to get it fixed (it was free last time i went) Now it'll probably take me 5 min to fix it but i gotta go the store to get the tools anyway.
I tried few tricks like pressing down on spacebar but no success but once it was working for like a min and when i slid open later still no go. :protest: |

Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
I finally found this post after having my TP for almost a year. (I got on the bandwagon with the rest of the folks whining about keyboard problems) I gave up returning to the Sprint store after my 5th replacement. I finallly decided to open the fon after some helpful tips on some sites. I actualy took a piece of mylar and sandwiched it between the keyboard and fon base which works fine. A occasional push of the spacebar and its back to normal. i will definitely give this one tip a try. THANKS!

Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
Well I have had no issues with my keyboard but I probably just jinx myself. My friend has had 3 replacements in 5 mo. right now he is working on a sceme calling sprint and letting them know about his keyboard not working so they can put notes in his account so when the tp2 comes out he will call them and tell them look at my notes I have been having this prob since..... lol lol

Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
I'm on Telus, and just picked up a TP2 in April, so 3 months in and my keyboard has started getting the symptoms of total failure. It actually failed for the entire day yesterday, but has been working off and on today.
I called Telus, and theres no hope of swapping it in for a TP2... really sucks considering they said they didn't know when the TP2 was going to be coming out... |
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
I am TP #3. First two were new. I got a refurb this time. Keyboard stopped working in less than 24hrs. Pressed on the right corner and it started working again.
|
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
Has anyone other than the OP actually tried opening up their TP to see if the keyboard ribbon is simply unplugged?
|
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored

Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
Mine too is now completely dead. For those who've tried repairing it, I've had the cable pop back off when putting the case back together as well. Personally I can't wait till the TP2 comes out. Now my USB port is going flakey on me.
|
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
I have a Verizon TP so I don't think that seeing how to take apart a Sprint one would help me. But, I always love phone gore. Very nice pictures and very informative. Thanks

Mine was doing the exact same thing... Lights came on, but pressing buttons did nothing. You need to unplug the cable and plug it back it. And double check all of them... My screen didn't work after I put it back together because the screen cable got bumped... All is good so far. |
Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
mine just died same issue lights come on and everything just that it doesnt work.. only had this baby 3 months... taking it to the store tomorrow ..flashing back to lock tonight

Re: hardware keyboard issue photo essay a.k.a. i was bored
I'm on my 5th TP now since March. This is the first time I had keyboard failures. This thing is driving me nuts...sometimes it will type...sometimes no...then sometimes it just repeats a bunch of keys. Tried resetting, hard reset, different ROM, everything.
I haven't opened it yet...but I am tempted to since the Sprint advanced exchange said I have done too many replacements. Not my fault you have crappy refurbs! I did notice behind my battery I'm missing a screw. idiots refurbed and forgot put all the screws back. Do you think my keyboard cable is coming off? |
