the most bizarre GPS problem

Ok so today I was dropping my fiancee at the airport and REALLY needed my GPS to work, here is the senario. We left early mourning and I programmed the location into Telenav (this version because I have jungalo rom and there was no telenav by default). Telenav worked fine the night before getting us to were we spent the night but this mourning it had us take a "right turn" off a bridge lol, once we picked the supposed right route it litterly freaked out, after stopping it acted like we were still moving when we were not. When I played around with it to get it to reset the route the phone soft resets. This happend every time i use Telenav, so i tried google maps. Which works fine but the instant I hit, use gps, it soft resets (sometime right away, sometimes it works for 10 secs then resets). Talk about a time when I really needed it the most, it failed, what is the problem here?

Re: the most bizarre GPS problem

Sounds like you need a new phone. Could be an issue with the GPS chip or a specific piece of memory that's allocated for GPS usage that could be corrupted or something. Definitely sounds like something hardware related though if it's soft resetting every time GPS is initialized.

just left the battery out and ran another test, I when to Google Maps, use GPS, get my location, type in search, type get directions, soft reset instantly. What on earth would cause this?

GPS Chip has gone over to the dark side.

Re: the most bizarre GPS problem

I am having a very similar problem....

It just began yesterday. I have flashed SSK 1.5 to my VZW TP and all has been fine until yesterday I went to use Tom Tom 7 and it cannot find my GPS receiver. So I tried plain old Google Maps and it was having a harder then usual time finding a satellite. When it finally found one it soft reset, and this has been sporadically happening. When it is able to find my location in Google Maps it will not update even though it says I am fixed to 7 satellites...

I am at a total loss, having GP not working after a week of perfection is a real downer but having the phone resetting is not really acceptable. What kind of problem solving can I (we) do.

Did not mean to high-jack your thread, seems like we have a similar problem.

Re: the most bizarre GPS problem

no, i am some what relieved someone else is having a similar issue so that we can troubleshoot this, have you installed any new GPS software? Both google maps and especially Telenav are new, going to try to uninstall and reinstall later tonight, if that does not work what should I do? Should I reflash it?

Re: the most bizarre GPS problem

I am also having this problem, since I flashed to Juicy rom, then to SSK B2B Rom and now flashing to KK to see if problem persists.

Mine also soft resets, and gps is not avail anymore

It may just be my paranoia, but I would say its that massive usage of government tracking that is causing weird battery / heat / gps issues.

Think about it, if you have problems after you flash, maybe the sub rom cannot communicate with the hardware layer due to different drivers in the real rom.

I dont think that is far fetched, or loony but thats just me, and my knowledge of our government makes me know differently than most.

Flashing to KK's fixed it.

hey gianthobbit,

Just wanted to update you as to my situation. My GPS does work now, and my phone has stopped doing that odd resetting (atleast for the past day or so). The GPS fix isn't as strong as it was and sometimes Google Maps hangs for awhile trying to fix satellites but TT7 seems to be ok.

Have you re-flashed ?

Re: the most bizarre GPS problem

I am currently running SSK Rom 21109 that I cooked with SSK 1.5c2 and was having the same problem no matter what program I used to access the GPS my phone would soft reset. I made a backup of my phone with sprite backup 6.5 and then hard reset the phone, I had to reinstall !!bored's gps fix and then restored from my backup. I have been running TT7 and Google maps and Live Search maps through my phone for the last 2 days and haven't had a reset yet. If you can make a backup of your phone try giving it a hard reset and reinstalling the gps fix of bored's and see if this fixes your problem, it seems to have fixed mine.

In reference to your previous thread, your on stock rom? This is intresting, everyone that I have heard has had this problem has flashed there device, thats what I thought cased the problem... Its intermittent for me as well, yesterday for example google maps worked, sort of. Sometimes my location was no were near where I was, Id turn it on then off and it would work. Any time I tired to map directions though the phone would reset. I hope someone here has some answerrs for us.

Had the same problem. Ultimately had to return the device for a swap.

Symptoms:
1. Accessing the GPS will work for approx 5-10 seconds followed by a reset or lock-up.
2. GPS will never lock on to any satellites.

Solution:
1. Depending on the radio, downgrading to 1.03.15 should solve it.
2. If already on 1.03.15 then return unit for replacement.

+1

Interesting. I had upgraded my radio to 1.11. Got a little better reception but had horrible battery issues and my GPS freaked out as stated above. I downgraded to 1.03 and everything is normal again.

1.03.15f

based on what Freeza said above, im screwed... could i upgrade to see if that fixes it? Does this mean it is a hardware problem or what, why would it work so well and then just one day not?

sorry I didn't see this thread earlier.. I also had this problem on juicy 4.11, but It went away when I uninstalled live search. not sure what the problem was, but I believe it's the newer ver(s) of L.S.

I dont even think I have MS live search on my phone, what is the EXCACT name that it appears in the program folder (or better yet where on device is the exe stored, the shortcut may be deleted.)

I updated the quick gps and so far so good, I will report back if its a for sure fix or not.

Re: the most bizarre GPS problem

the lock for 5 seconds then soft reset happened to me on mightyrom 4.12...

i actually installed memmaid and it messed with some registry settings, not sure what but reflashed the rom, didn't mess with memmaid at all and have had no issues with GPS since.

EDIT...

didn't have any GPS issues prior to using memmaid, radio is 1.07.01v, flashed many roms before so gotta think it's a reg value that was messed with as there were no previous issues. so just try to reflash the same rom then hard reset but don't downgrade or upgrade your radio...

Same thing happened to me using Sprint Diamond leaked version, the phone would lock up and then soft reset everytime I tried using the gps. Luckily I just receieved a new phone from Sprint for an unrelated problem.

Re: the most bizarre GPS problem

ok so i have 1.03 firmware...but everything seems to be working fine now. I used memaid to clean up a bit and i tested with iguidance 2009, tomtom7 and google maps. All seems well. My phone is configured exactly the way i want it to be and would suck to get it replace and put it back to how i want it.

Are we sure its a hardware issue? Because i cannot replicate the issue to get this replaced

is memaid a program that you run once in a while (like a defrag on a pc) or something that you use to monitor memmory at all time>?

I ran memmaid and I seem to be ok for now. I had read that old/bad Quick GPS data can cause this but I still had a freeze (soft resets and power button not waking device up) after getting fresh data w/o ever even opening GPS Tool or Garmin XT. I will have to wait and see what happens over the next few days but I don think its the phone or radio. I think flashing may clear that bad data out which makes it appear to be the ROM or radio. I will be buying Memmaid...i like it now that I have used it. Good stuff

Dont know where I got that bit of advice on the Quick GPS but updated my data and have had flawless GPS now for two days, will report back if any thing changes.
