Why is \Windows access so slow?

It takes forever to look at \Windows's contents, even if I'm browsing via active sync. What gives? Is there anything I can do to speed it up? Any files I can delete I don't need?

you got to remember that its looking for everything in that folder and if youve ever scrolled through it you know that theres alot of stuff in there. IMHO and probly others.

Re: Why is \Windows access so slow?

Because there's about a billion manila files all dumped straight in /windows. ;) If you've added new manila files (TF3D from the HD for example), then it's even worse as the files in ROM are still there as well.

Re: Why is \Windows access so slow?

In \Windows there are 6287 files, totaling 246mb in size and it takes about 3 minutes to load.

on my desktop, my system32 folder has 16,589 files totaling 2.98GB in size. This folder takes less than a second to fill completely. Even if my desktop cpu is 4x as fast as my phone's, doesn't this seem a bit too askew?

It just seems like browsing the \Windows folder with active sync would have been faster. I know the cpu is limited, but my guess is Qualcomm's cpu simply doesn't handle file operations like this very well.

Have all WM devices always been like this? Are the Dell PPC's like this?

Mine wasn't really slow until I added the TF3D from HD

Question, do you browse your computers system32 folder via USB?
Probably not... it's just slow man... like coz said, it's the nature of the beast!

Could be. I haven't been particularly impressed by the accuracy and consistency of any of the benchmark utilities I've seen, so it's hard to put objective numbers on it though.

If you're looking to browse/modify files in the windows directory, I'd suggest avoiding activesync. I typically use MyMobiler's Mobile Explorer utility. It will bring up my Windows directory in about 1-2 seconds. Also, some of the old USB mass storage programs like WM5torage would let you mount the onboard memory for faster access.

You say you use myMobiler's mobile explorer, but when I tried to use it, it wants to browse the folders on my pc, not my phone. How do i browse my phone's contents?

Re: Why is \Windows access so slow?

Your desktop PC is using a directory cached in ram. Ram running 100x faster. Being accessed by a CPU running 8x faster (per core) with instructions that operate in far fewer clock cycles.

Your WinMo is trying to struggle through really slow flash stores, or mildly slow ram, with a slow cpu, with a mediocre instruction set.

And yeah, it's the manilla files. All you need to do is hard reset and never install anything and you'll be able to browse \Windows really fast.

Note, do not hard reset, that was a joke.

The left pane represents your PC; the right pane represents your phone. Files will be transferred to/from the active directory for each device. For example, if you wanted to transfer the Home manila mode9 file out of /windows to your desktop, it would look like this:

Ya, at first glance it just looks like a folder/tree-view pane and a detail pane :)

Here's an update: I hard reset my phone and now my windows folder loads up in about a quarter of the time it used to take. Go figure.

Must have been something you had installed. The stock ROMs are horribly slow at loading the windows directory, too... but I don't think there are too many people who are active around here who are still on a stock ROM.

Re: Why is \Windows access so slow?

How long does it/did it take when you use explorer on your phone? Mine takes only about 5 seconds to load up all the files. I almost never browse my folders in Activesync though, and when I do I do it through the storage card as USB drive.

//I'm using stock ROM with the Sprint clean-up tweak

Re: Why is \Windows access so slow?

I'm using KK's rom and it only takes about 5 to 6 seconds for the \windows folder to load. I've heard Mighty's is even faster (but I think it's because his is more of stripped rom).

My Mogul used to take about 5 minutes to load the Windows directory, and half of the time it would just freeze up and I'd have to soft reset.
I definitely don't miss that at all. My Touch Pro has never taken more than about 10 seconds tops to load :)

Re: Why is \Windows access so slow?

My TP on the stock ROM took like 45-50 seconds to load the Windows directory. Of course that was when modifying the task bar icons was new and I was in that directory all of the time... it was awful.

Re: Why is \Windows access so slow?

Well mine is only 3 seconds with GSM a GSM manila installed [not HD]

But... man I hope XBOXMod's new manila won't make \windows take minutes to load.

Re: Why is \Windows access so slow?

i think it my have something to do with the pagepool size. when i was using stock rom, it took a long time to list the entire directory but when i started using a custom rom with 12 MB as the pagepool it only took 2 seconds. this is pretty much my criterion for comparing custom roms...

Chronster I read from another thread you're running the sprint stock rom. When I first got my TP \Windows was dreadfully slow loading until I flashed a custom rom. Now it is pretty much instant.

that's interesting. I wonder what it is that makes the difference.

Might be this lol. 32 is the max right? And you can only edit the pagepool by flashing the rom right?

Re: Why is \Windows access so slow?

It seems to be a combination of the pagepool size and what build of WM it is. I noticed a large speed-up in access time since the 20xxx series of builds over the 19xxx (stock uses this). Just my opinion though.

Anything is max, you can set it to whatever you wish. It's most easily modified on the ROM file, then you flash it on to your phone.

There's been mixed results with the pagepool. It's rumored that a larger one decreases battery life, and the performance gains are minimal.

Stock is 18mb, I personally have mine set to 24 as I often keep a few extra programs open and switch between them a lot.

There's no need to set it super tiny because the TP has so much available RAM. The pagepool size cuts in to your available RAM.

I am running KK's 1.8 ROM and it only takes about 2 or 3 seconds to load.
