H.264 Video

I had a DVD that I just converted using Handbrake.

I used an .mp4 container with H.264 video (target file size 850Mbps-not sure what bitrate it wound up using) with AAC (128kbps) audio. Resolution was same as original DVD.

I tried playing the video using Coreplayer and it was unwatchable. It dropped many more frames than it played.

Is the Touch Pro just not powerful enough to play H.264 video or is there something else I need to do to get it to work right?

I found the same thing, when I knocked it down to about 1/2 that size it plays a lot better.

The video performance of these things is really pretty pathetic.

I'm trying to encode it now using XVID to see if that's any better? I've played a lot of XVIDs at DVD resolutions and those have been watchable, so I'll see how that comes out.

I've found H.264 played with WMP is the best combo on the Touch Pro.

Best results VGA resolution (640x480) encoded at about 512kbps (450MB for 2-hour movie)

Hmm.the H.264 movie I encoded doesn't play at all in WMP. I get audio, but no video. I wonder what I might have done wrong.

Re: H.264 Video

I just started using HandBrake and for the first time got video comparable to CloneDVD Mobile I think.

Xvid (480x272) at 650kb/s with 160kb/s stereo and the only "option" was decomb.
That worked out to 350mb per hour in this case.

I spent a buch of time trying differengt codecs and Xvid seems the best.
H.264 wasn't playable at any of the resolutions and bitrates I tried.

have you guys tried the TCMP player packaged by Technology1? - The thread is in the touch pro forum...

Re: H.264 Video

I get the best results with MP4 container, H.264 encoding, 640-width video (widescreen), and about 700KBPS. At those settings, video is pretty much smooth for me in WMP, with occasional lagginess. I'm really not very happy with how these devices do with video, but there is a price to pay for the screen resolution being what it is. Those who say the Omnia does a much better job at video fail to remember that we're talking 96,000 pixels vs 307,200. If you encode video at low resolution or play it at low resolution, it's far smoother.

I believe the video drivers are the bottleneck here, however. If there were a player which used OpenGL for rendering, I have a feeling video would be perfectly fine on these devices.

As it stands, I can get 640x480 xVid at 1.1Mbits to bench at almost 90% in TCPMP (DirectDraw with ATI Driver), so it's at least decent.

Sorry for the double-post; the edit button seems to be broken tonight.

Just wanted to add that it benches 800k 320x240 xVid at 180%, and my other media player is a Creative Zen. It certainly beats that, and the pixel density is still reasonable - as good as the previous-generation Touch.

I'm sure you could eek out 640x480 at 100% if you chose a slightly lower bitrate.
