Storage card disappears when I hook up to data cable

Anyone else having this problem and know how to correct it? As soon as I disconnect it the phone says "Photo Storage Card Inserted. Would you like to view the pictures on your storage card now? yes or no?. Also the import media while pops up like i'm loading a digital cam. So do yall think the pc think the phone is a digital camera? Thanks in advance guys

Are you using active sync or disk drive when you connect your phone? You should not have this issue if you connect via active sync.

Re: Storage card disappears when I hook up to data cable

There's an application in my ROM, sorry I don't know the name, that gives me a popup to select between activesync or Storage Card, and one other option. It also has a check to "never ask again"

If you select the Storage Card option, it unmounts the SD card from the phone and lets it mount to the computer instead for faster data access.

This kinda sounds like what you have.

Re: Storage card disappears when I hook up to data cable

Using my phone to jam out in my car, I was playing music from the SD card. Got out when I got to school, the phone couldn't find the card. I spent all of one class looking for it, and eventually thinking my car stero messed something up so that the TP couldn't see the SD card... I hard reseted the phone, but it didn't work.

I'm pissed. I'm in classes all day, so I can't really use PPCGeeks search as it frustrates me since I'm used to using a PC for this. But I searched, and couldn't find much so I hard reset, thinkin that it would fix my issue.

If I would only have patience and knew this before...

Re: Storage card disappears when I hook up to data cable

It happened again! I was using the phone through my stereo in the car to play music... using the Disk Drive. Worked flawlessly. Get out of the car, plug it in to the PC, works. Then all of a sudden, my storage card goes missing

I tried to reconnect, tried soft resetting, even tried connecting in the car again. When I do Disk Drive option I can see the card on my PC and play music, no problem. When I unplug, or place in Active Sync option, can't see the card. Can't even see the card when it's NOT plugged in.

Tried using that USBtoPC program, several different ways. Doesn't work anymore.

What the hell is going on? Anyone seen this before or am I just cursed with storage cards and Touch Pros???

Any help would be fantastic!!!

Re: Storage card disappears when I hook up to data cable

Anyone? I really don't want to hard reset the phone. Is there any way for activesync to recognize the phone or for the phone to recognize the storage card???

what am I doing wrong?

Re: Storage card disappears when I hook up to data cable

Ok, I don't know if this is the solution or the reason for everyone's problem in this thread; however I have a laptop I use at work and when I first connected my TP to the laptop and chose "Disk Drive" option, the next time I tried to access files on the storage card they were "corrupted". Ended up that my laptop has encryption software on it and any files locally or on thumb drives get encrypted. Since the phone in "Disk Drive" mode acted like an external thumb drive, all my files became locked. I luckily found a file that Credant placed in EVERY directory and I got them deleted, but not until I had to uninstall and reinstall several apps before I realized what had happened. So I choose "Active Sync" every time now. Just an FYI

Re: Storage card disappears when I hook up to data cable

That encryption idea has nothing to do with my situation, but I appreciate the effort.

For some ungodly reason, my phone won't recognize my storage card. It will play music off of it when i connect it to my car stereo and use the "disk drive" option, it will allow my PC to see the storage card with the "disk drive" option. It will use activesync properly, and everything else works.

But the phone, when in activesync or unplugged, won't recognize the storage card. I really don't want to do a hard reset, or have this happen again. Can anyone give me any insight to what is going on, or any help? I would GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!!!

You're sure encryption has nothing to do with it?

This is a well known and documented but little understood problem. The general consensus is that if you unplug or plug in a USB cable while anything is accessing the SD card, this problem can happen. Alot of times, if you check the card , you will find it has a single file with a .menc extension. This means that the phone has encrypted all the info on the phone (edit...I meant on the SD card) and it will not be viewable by any other device, and the only way out is a long an painful data restoration process that will allow you to recover most of the data off the card in chunks. Its really quite a pain in the ***...its happened to me once and to my roomate once. Since then, I make it a point not to plug in or unplug a USB cable unless I am POSITIVE that the card is not being accessed by the phone.

So....if you are listening to music on the SD card via the phone, and dont exit the music program before unpluggin the USB cable (or in your case, stop playing the music on your stereo, turn off the stereo, then disconnect the USB cable) then this could randomly happen to you at any time.

The encryption may be a part of your problem...otherwise, you might want to check your card itself...maybe test it with another card?

What the hell!?!? You were right. This is bullshark!

How do I go about getting that off my SD card? I assume it wouldn't be as easy as just deleting that file... cause that would make NO sense what so ever. I have had a 6700, 6800, and some really old PDA that used a card, and I have never heard of this before.

Now what do I do?

(In my fit of rage, and general madness, I really do appreciate that explanation. It was excellent and was very clear and extensive. Thank you)

OK, this is weird. With my current ROM, I now have a Internet Sharing option too(along with A/S and Disk Drive). Last night I chose Internet Sharing(ICS) and now I no longer get the popup asking me which I want . How do I get that to come back?? Right now it goes straight to ICS.

Start>>Settings>>Connections>>USB2PC

Edit: Also, make sure internet connection sharing is disconnected. Also, try a soft reset. Try plugging it into A PC, wait till it detects the USB connections...then use the Windows option to "Safley remove this hardware", then pull out the USB cable when the PC says its ok to do so (you should ALWAYS disconnect every USB device like this, just FYI). Finally..if all else fails...you can try installing the cab version of it and iut should overwrite the old one and startup like new again.

Go here and download this program : http://www.pcinspector.de/Sites/smar...htm?language=1

Install it on your PC and stick the SD card into your computer with a microsd adapter. If you dont have one, you CAN mount the card using the phone...but it takes ALOT longer to do it this way. The process takes a long time as it is....

Anyway..install it, open it..and select it to scan your card.....again..it WILL take an hour or more to scan it. When its done...it will come up with chunks of data. Most of your folders should show up...so you may see a folder called Music, but if you go in it..it will say unknown data or something like that. Its fine..just recover those files (it might just let you copy them out..im not sure how...I cant remember) and you will get your data back. The program will let you click on the files to see what they are if I remember correctly.

I am sorry I cant be more descriptive because its been a while since I had to use it...but it works great.....I think it might prompt you to pay but dont worry...the free version works just fine. You should be able to get the hang of it pretty quickly...most of it is pretty self explanatory.

Once all your data is off and recovered to your PC hard drive.....format the card and recopy all data back to it. Keep a backup on your PC of your SD card....I started doing that after this happened to me LOL....much easier than recovering it!

Good luck...lemme know if you have any questions.

I'm trying that now.

I thought I had fixed it by just taking the important stuff off, formatting the card, then replacing it. That actually worked... for a few, but then that .menc file showed back up.

I'll report back to see how well that this works. Thanks for the advice!

Re: Storage card disappears when I hook up to data cable

go to start>settings> bottom tab that says system > Encryption. Its an icon that looks like an sd card with a padlock on it. Click on that and uncheck the encrypt files when placed on storage card.

That will disable the encryption and the .menc file from showing up on your phone.

Use the phone hooked up to the pc and copy the contents of your phones sd card to the computer. Faster if you are in disk drive mode vs active sync.

Go back into the phone settings make sure the encrypt files when placed on storage card is still unchecked. Format the card to fat32 default settings if its larger then 2gb, quick format works. Format to fat default settings if it is under 2gb.

Copy the files back to the storage card. Now any new files put on the storage card will not be encrypted and you can go along as normal like you did on the mogul and apache. + be able to read all the files in other devices or a card reader on your pc.

I'm so confused. That encryption thing in the phone has ALWAYS been disabled, and it seems to happen only when I disconnect it from my car stereo without going in and changing the connection type from Disk Drive to Active Sync.

I don't get why this keeps happening, it's getting frustrating to keep formatting and replacing all those files... I don't have time for that sh!t every day, ya know.

How can I fix this permanently???

Theres a REALLY simple fix when your card goes missing. Open the back cover, pop the card so its not fully inserted and push it back in. Works for me everytime.

Re: Storage card disappears when I hook up to data cable

Bump for this Issue!

Re-inserting the card does not work. The card is no longer recognized by any device other than the Kenwood Head Unit.

I have a Kenwood Excelon with a USB port, and have the same issue!

I have been scouring the internet, and have LOTS of people complaining about this issue. The quick fix seems to be reformatting, but if your storing 8GBs of music on your phone, this is not acceptable. Plus, I have to re-install ALL my important info/apps that were on the SD card.

I remember in one odd situation, I re-partitioned and got some data back with a partition editor.

I guess we have an answer with the .menc file.

That's so weird, did I say I had a kenwood head unit? Anyways, if I didn't, I have one.

I have found, that deleting the .menc file through the PC and then "Ejecting" the card fixes it. Haven't had an issue yet. Still can use my apps on the card through the phone, and still see all the contents of the card via the PC and phone.

This is a really weird situation. Are you saying that if I partition the card to keep the music separate from the apps/other files, that will work? I mean, if you pretty much only listen to music on your phone through the head unit, and the kenwood only encrypts the music files because of the partition, wouldn't that work?

Runamok81 02-26-2009 02:32 AM

Re: Storage card disappears when I hook up to data cable

No, you didn't mention that you had a Kenwood Head-unit. Specifically, I'm using the KDC-X590. I called Kenwood tech support today, and the tech escalated the issue for me. Hope they can find an answer.

No, I'm not suggesting partitioning the SD card. However, that is an interesting idea.... I was just stating that I was able to recover data on my SD card by using a partition editor and shifting the partition over. I was also able to recover everything using a data recovery program (even after a reformat!)

Did you say that deleting the .menc file permanently fixes the problem? Or just a quick fix? I like to run tomtom navigator and the map data is on my storage card, so when the Kenwood locks it down, it makes tomtom useless.

I'm going to test afew things to see what causes the .menc file and subsequent lockdown to the Kenwood.

1. Stopping all SD card access before removing the phone by changing the source on the head unit from USB to something else before disconnecting the phone. Or even getting the .menc file to appear and then seeing if this method will remove it.

2. Switching the phone from Disk Drive to ActiveSync mode before disconnecting.

3. Finding a Windows Mobile PPC program that will force mount the SD card and delete the .menc file. Might play with this SD card program.

Re: Storage card disappears when I hook up to data cable

Im in class right now and will post what specific Kenwood I'm using in a few. Yes, i think partitioning the SD card (one side for music, rest for the other stuff like garmin, tom tom, etc.) is an idea that may work. I'll try that later today.

Deleting the .menc file through the PC is just a quick fix, although to save you some time, switching from usb to activesync BEFORE turning off your car, in my exp., has kept it from encryption. I was going to say it worked this morning, but i wasn't paying attn and turned my car off, so now my card is "missing". I hate this, good call on calling Kenwood, a step i'm too lazy to do.

Runamok81 02-28-2009 04:41 PM

Re: Storage card disappears when I hook up to data cable

I learned that the Kenwood can read a dual partition on an SD card. And deleting the .men encryption file is a quick fix. However the encryption method alters the file names, and leaves the filenames in their altered abbreviated state if you delete the .men file to revive the card. Plus, you need PC access to revive the card.

Isn't there some way we can use the HTC Touch Pro in a Kenwood Head Unit without it locking the card down with it's encryption method?

Anyone have any ideas? Software suggestions, etc?

vestaviajag 03-01-2009 11:49 AM

Re: Storage card disappears when I hook up to data cable

I agree, there must be a way, or some registry hack that keeps this from happening. Deleting the .menc file is a quick fix, but like you said, you have to do it through a PC.

I do have a question, what do you mean, it only deletes that file, and keeps the other files in abbreviated format? It doesn't alter anything for me, just adds the menc file. Doesn't change the file type or name.

Very odd, what exactly does it do when it encrypts yours?

I will be trying the partition idea later today, as well as go searching in the registry to see if there is any clue to why this happens. This never happened with my Titan or Apache.

Runamok81 03-05-2009 01:38 AM

Re: Storage card disappears when I hook up to data cable

Well, as suggested by a Kenwood tech, the abbreviated file names may only appear if you set the Kenwood to random play.

For now, I haven't resolved the situation and I am relying on a separate USB thumb drive to store all my music.... :disgust:

I don't see how a registry hack on the HTC Touch Pro will help. This is because the problem originates with the Kenwood Head Unit altering the files on the micro SDHC card.

For instance, after using the Kenwood head unit, the .menc file prevents my even my linux based PC from reading the card (for linux geeks... I have to manual force mount.) I have never run into this using SDHC on many types of devices. However, Windows will recognize the .menc altered card.

Perhaps we should start a new thread for HTC touch Pro user's that connect with Kenwood Head units??????
