Re: TP Internet sharing

If you use the software your carrier provides, be prepared to pay for it. And it's not exactly cheap.

If you use the .cab installer, or even better, write to a ROM that has it built in (I.E. not the stock carrier ROM). Carriers disabled the free internet sharing that Microsoft made for the phone, but the pure awesomeness of the geniuses here have made that all the easier for lay-people like you and I to make that a problem of the past.

But there are threads for that as Frazell said, so I'd take advantage of them.

Re: TP Internet sharing

I have the HTC Touch. When trying to connect my MacBook to the Touch to use the PAM via bluetooth, I've been getting the following error message:
Error code 67 Registration failure. Your PCS Vision username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again.
I've seen lots of references to this error on the Web and in this forum, but no one really seems to have a definitive answer to the problem.

I just installed the Internet Sharing FIX.cab from the link on this page. Now the Internet Sharing "Connect" button on the Touch is grayed out.

So I guess I now have 2 problems.

First, does anyone know how to undo what the Internet Sharing FIX.cab has done to my Touch?

Second, does anyone know how to get around the "Error 67" problem I have when trying to connect my MacBook to the Internet via bluetooth by using the PAM feature on my Touch?

Thanks.

Something everybody MUST know while getting these instructions here and executing them:

Technically speaking by doing this you are violating your Terms of Service contract which specifies that unless you're paying for a "Phone as Modem" or PAM plan you may not tether or otherwise share your devices internet connection with another device. They can tell by the type of usage when you are tethering, even with the registry hack. That said, typically unless you're abusing it (ie. going over 5GB/month) they will not bother you about it. As quoted by employees at a sprint store, they would rather keep you as a customer then argue with you over something like that. The ppl who have been contacted are usually just told that theyre supposed to be paying for the service and will have it added to their plan if they keep using it.

So.... use at your own risk. There are a lot of threads with ppl talking about using it as their primary internet connection and using WAY more than 5GB/month and Sprint not doing anything about it. I personally use it as a backup connection when Cox is down.

...Just want you guys to be fully educated on the subject.

oh, and the cab/reg edits work around sprints built in stop to this. the phone comes with ICS stock, however it is locked to "Phone as Modem" network instead of "Sprint" network. If your not paying for a PAM plan, you cant access that network and therefor ICS will give you an error when trying to connect. The cab/regedit changes the network ICS accesses to "Sprint", which is the network you have access to so your phone has internet access. Hope I cleared that up for ya.

This is the 3rd ICS question i've answered this morning... I promise, the search button does work!

i thought ICS doesnt work with Macs...

Re: TP Internet sharing

i believe at worst you just have to get the drivers for a mac... But the error code come from the fact that the phone is currently trying to connect to the "PAM" server to which it has no access. This must be switched to the "Sprint" server.

I would disagre 100% with that statement. I used ICS/WMwifirouter everyday for over a year in my old Titan/Moguls & it worked super.

I can't get it to work consistently in my TP to save my life....

John, it does seem your case is a little more unique... I have a touchpro and had to do nothing special besides install the cab for mine to work properly. In this case it seems the cab didnt install properly or the new settings weren't able to take affect. I've never used a touch, it is possible that the registry is slightly different for ICS than it is for the TP. If thats the case make sure you are specifically searching in the Touch forum for your answer as it will be specific for your phone. Also, if you have a registry editing program it may be worthwhile to poke around and see if a key is named a little different b/c that would break the cab. You could then get it working by making the edits manually.

Re: TP Internet sharing

Thank you all for trying to help.

I had to do a hard reset to undo the problems caused by my frivolous installation of Internet Sharing FIX.cab.

I then went to the page provided by prochobo, "How To Enable Internet Connection Sharing On Sprint HTC Touch Pro." This got me to the point where the 2nd drop-down menu on the Internet Sharing page, Network Connection, is now being displayed.

But that's where I'm now stuck. I've changed the Network Connection from Phone As Modem to Sprint, but I'm unable to turn on Data Connection in the Comm Manager and therefore still can't get rid of the Error 67. This may be because I'm on a Mac. Also, as z28marols1 pointed out, I'm actually on the Touch Pro forum, when I should be on the Touch (HTC Vogue) forum.

So I'll now go to the correct forum and post there. Thanks, again, for all the attempts to help.

Re: TP Internet sharing

I have no problem continuing to help tho, even on the wrong forum ;-)

You can start a connection by opening up your browser on the phone or having POutlook run a sync (if you have email set up) The reason you cant start a connection the way they tell you to is that the comm manager is different on the touch pro. I honestly dont think its because your on a mac...

Re: TP Internet sharing

z28marols1, thanks. I'll take you up on your offer to help even though I'm technically in the wrong forum.

I've made much progress since my last posting, but I'm still not there.

As I said in my last posting, I tweaked the Touch's registry such that the 2nd drop-down menu on the Internet Sharing application's page, Network Connection, is now being displayed. I then changed the drop-down Network Connection selection from Phone as Modem to Sprint PCS.

I now am able to start Internet Sharing on the Touch, select Connect to Network from the Mac's bluetooth menu, and all appears fine. Both devices say that the Mac is connected to the network. But the Mac has no IP address, and it clearly is not finding the Internet.

I'm now stuck, but I'm so close. Is there anything left to try in order to enable my Mac to connect via bluetooth to the Internet through the Touch's Internet Sharing?

Re: TP Internet sharing

something i came across somewhere else and may apply here... are you using the activesync software for mac? i think one is called "missing sync" or something like that. I think i remember reading somewhere that tethering wont work without activesync or Windows mobile device center (vista) installed. that may be where your last hangup is.

I just got the phone yesterday and it is set to use sprint pcs over cellular line, and the connect button is greyed out as he mentioned. i ran the cab and it still dosent release the connect button. Do i need to do the regedit to make it work? thanks all, i am not a newbie, but cant get it to work on a brand new TP.

I dont know if this helps or not, but i just got my TP yesterday. I installed the cab and the same thing happened to me. Uninstall the cab, then the connect button will work. do a soft reset after you remove the patch.
i called sprint and asked for my vision username and password (btw was not what it used to be), now edit the connection and enter the user name ie....younamehere@sprintpcs.com
....then enter the password they gave you...that is my suggestion, i am gonna try and let you all now.....if this helps hit me with a thanks

FYI..i did this with an online rep with the chat session you can have and was very fast, no transfers...lol...let me know

yes, usually have to on some phones like the vogue, usually as long as i open internet sharing and connect while my system boots, it is already connected when i long in (with xp or vista cpu and my mogul)..the patch did the opposite of what it should, it blocks you from hitting the connect, at least for me, and my TP is brand new got it yesterday. so i undid the ICS fix and will try and reactivate it again, and try the setting as in the post i just did above this and see if it works...any suggestions?
thanks

I've done both the reg edit and the cab. First the reg edit, then after i had to hard reset for another reason i just installed the cab. Both worked, however i think it worked better just editing the registry manually.

how to internet sharing fix.cab on a htc touch pro

z28marols1 03-16-2009 08:33 AM

Re: TP Internet sharing

are you asking how to do it?
get the instructions/cab here.

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=42730

Either make the reg edits with the proper program or download the cab to your phone/storage card and install the cab. soft reset and your done.

Also, please read post 7 in this thread for important legal information regarding usage of this hack.
