Verizon Touch Pro and Data Roaming

I have a Verizon Data Plan on my Verizon Touch Pro. I live in Nevada, it connects to the internet fine while I'm in Reno or Las Vegas but not in between. I talked to a Verizon rep and she said that Verizon doesn't allow data connections outside of their cell towers. She said that with the merge with Altell I should be able get a data connection probably by the summer. But in the mean time is there a way to set up a modem connection to my ISP directly (basically using the phone as a dial up modem)? I have done this in the past with my old Motorola V710 (but that also ran on analog mode). I tried the celluar modem and Hayes Compatible options but couldn't get them to work. I just want to check my email, not surf the web.

Thanks,
Pete

I know they have it in Reno, I would also expect in Las Vegas, don't know about in between.
