Measuring performance quantitatively?

I see all these posts for different ROMs and everyone talks about page pools and snappiness, etc...but is there any kind of actual measurement of performance increases in a custom ROM? I know it's not like it's overclocked, it's just a more efficient use of resources, so...maybe app load times, or TF3D lag (or lack thereof) after X minutes of active usage, or...?

See, I'm a productivity junkie. So when it comes to custom ROMs, I don't especially care about removing bloatware (which I can ignore), or having preloaded apps (which I can install manually), or a particular look and feel (which I just don't care about) -- but a performance increase is very enticing, and seems like it isn't something I could get without flashing.

My issue is that every ROM seems to come out a little buggy, at least more so than stock, but I suppose even that is debatable. Don't get me wrong, hats off to the developers for all they manage to do on these platforms. But regardless, there is obviously some risk involved.

So before I risk bugginess or worse by flashing my shiny new phone, for which I walked 18 miles barefoot in the snow uphill both ways, I'd kind of like to see more evidence of performance improvements besides "it feels snappier", etc.

Is this a realistic thing to hope for?

Or should I just suck it up and start playing with some ROMs? :-)

Search around for "benchmark" testers.

Re: Measuring performance quantitatively?

I would like to know what everyone else is doing for upgrades and making their phone snappier as well. i have a htc 6800 upgraded to the latest alltel rom. I have messed around with the kitchen and cooked a few roms, but never turned out the way i liked.

I have three other friends that have been cooking roms as well here but they don't seem to be very helpful.

Any suggestions on what i should be looking for or doing.

Thanks for replying to this noobish question of mine

There are quite a few performance tweaks you can do without flashing to a new rom. At the very least do the cache increases to speed up TF3D, you may find that is enough.
