USB Device Not Recognized

Hi guys,

Searched quite a bit and didn't find an answer. I want to transfer files to my TP so I grabbed a USB cable here at work and plugged it into my Vista machine. When I do I get "USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it."

So, I tried the next computer... same thing. Is there a specific driver I need to be able to transfer files or images without activesync?

Darren

Re: USB Device Not Recognized

I have Vista 64-bit Ultimate. I didn't need to install anything for it to recognize and run my TP.

1) Are you at Sp1?
2) Have you run the CD that came with the phone? I had to do this in XP.

My guess is that one or the other will straighten you right out. Obviously running the CD would be quicker than Sp1 anyways.

Re: USB Device Not Recognized

I'm runnning 64-bit Enterprise and 32-bit Enterprise. I have the latest SP for all my OSs. It worked at home on my Win7 (I work at MS) with disk but can't seem to get it to work on any machine without the disk. I was hoping to just be able to plug it in and be able to transfer files.

I tried bluetooth ftp next as a work around and while it says the file was transferred it is nowhere to be found after. I checked the default folder, not there, changed to a new folder, not there. Does anything work on this phone? Ah, found the files, not where I directed them to go but I found them at least.

Re: USB Device Not Recognized

I haven't had any issues. Be sure it's connected as disk mode, and all will work fine. Can't expect it to be recognized in activesync mode without activesync installed on the host machine.

I do personal computer work and keep a toolkit of programs saved to the SD card of my phone, I just bring the USB cable with me. If I need one of the programs, pull the cable out of my pocket and I have everything I could possibly need right there with me. It's worked on every computer I've had to repair so far. Windows 2000 and newer.

Re: USB Device Not Recognized

Windows will display this error if the USB chipset on the PC side isn't supplying good enough power to your phone's USB chip or the USB data lines are getting messed up.

Use a higher quality USB cable and make sure your USB ports are supplying a good stable 5volts. Some laptops USB chipsets are extremely bad at providing good USB power (Same applies to anything USB). Next issue is your connector could be blown out causing a bad connection (either side of the cable). As a last resort try using a shorter USB cable or powered hub.

If all of the above is good, 99% chance its your phone.

As for the laptop issue above, try using a powered USB hub

well some how it just showed up..idk what i did but its working so that allows me to flash my phone from time to time...but that was just random...i might have to invest in a powered usb port...

Re: USB Device Not Recognized

I just ran across the same issue with my new TPro.
i grabbed my trusty usb cable from the bottom of my bag, and it didn't work. Switched to my best, exceedingly expensive usb cable, and it worked on the same port. tested the old trusty with my old phone... didn't work.

So... This issue may be caused by a faulty usb cable.

Have you tried turning off "Enable advanced network functionality" on your Windows Mobile?
Start> Settings> Connections> USB to PC
deselect "Enable advanced network functionality"

I had to do this on my work laptop.

Re: USB Device Not Recognized

I had an issue like this OP (Vista 64bit too). I was using the USB port on my front bezel of my case which connects via separate cheap 3rd party cables to the connectors on the actual motherboard. My motherboard is newer than my case and uses latest USB 2.0 spec (but all are backwards compatible). I doubt the case cables were this same standard. As soon as I stopped using the front case bezel port and switched to the rear USB port (directly on the mobo) all my issues cleared up instantly. Oddly enough, the Mogul worked just fine. It seems to be the TP that is picky...

My Tp never shows up so I normally go to device manager and the diasble it ( it normally the only one with a exclamation under usb) and then I enable it and it pops right up.

I was just having the same problem. I've been plugging my Touch Pro into the front USB port on my Dell XP64 workstation with no problems since November. Today, it synced up just fine, then dropped the connection a few minutes later. Nothing I did would get it to connect again, either with ActiveSync or disk mode. Soft reset, uninstall/reinstall ActiveSync, swap cables, swap ports (on the front of the case)... nothing worked until I read the above post. I plugged into the rear USB port (the one coming straight off the motherboard) and ActiveSync immediately popped up. Now I'm connected again. Bizzare.

if so....well u can toggle that setting, cee if that works out for u. also, have u installed anything new that u didnt have on ur fone 2 months ago??

well, if u flashed ur rom, might wanna go to the thread where u got it from and post ur ? there, but if ur rom is stock...might have to uninstall/reinstall AS or WMDC..or soft resetting ur fone

Yes.

I haven't installed anything new; not that I can remember.

Re: USB Device Not Recognized

what i used were these instructions when i couldnt get it to recognize. the instructions are for win 7 beta, but i had to use them in Vista as well.

t is important that you install Windows Mobile Device Center before connecting your device to your PC. However if you have already connected your device and received the Driver failed to install error message, you can resolve the issue by removing the devices generic RNDIS driver entry from Device Manager.
  • Disconnect your device for your PC
  • From the start Menu open the control panel
  • Select “Hardware and Sound” then “Device Manager”
  • Now connect your device to you PC so that the associated driver shows up under “Network adapter”
  • Right click on the driver and select Uninstall
At this point disconnect your device, install WMDC if you haven’t already done so and the reconnect your device. WMDC should recognize the device and complete the driver install.

My Mogul connected to my front USB ports and it worked fine. My TP would not work with the front USB ports and only the rear. I used the same cable that came with my Mogul. Seems like the TP is just picky.

Re: USB Device Not Recognized

I tried every USB port and still no luck. I think I need to buy a new USB cord that came with the TP.

Re: USB Device Not Recognized

I reformatted my laptop, did windows update, and installed WMDC plus the USB Drivers from the CD and it still says "USB Device Not Recognized". And when I try using my Belkin USB cord that came with my car charger nothing even shows up on my laptop but you can tell its charging because the icon on the screen says so...

This happens to me on my XP macjine. WHat I do is reset the phone and shut my PC down for 15 minutes. Restart my PC and it detects it again. I dont know why this works.. but it does.

Re: USB Device Not Recognized

I run vista 32 and get this all the time. Sometimes I can simply use another USB port and it takes but mostly I have to shutdown and restart my computer. Resetting the phone does nothing and I use a powered hub. Very frusterating when you are in the middle of an unlock or building a rom. Wish I could figure out what causes this.

I have gone into the control panel and uninstalled the unknown device and do a refresh but the same problem.

Ive had this problem for months now, no fix. My TP is not recognized by any computer anywhere, no matter the settings. It will charge, but it wont recognize it as a disk drive.
