Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

Dang these results are encouraging. I'd like to know how long it'll be before some of the stain wears/rubs off, though.

I've done some googling of using RIT dye on plastic. It appears to be well known and common in the craft/hobbyist community. But I've seen quite a few posts warning that it will fade and/or rub off to some degree eventually. Krylon Fusion ('KF') (a spray can with a thin 'paint' that acts like a dye) is an alternative I've seen several places; and KF is designed for plastic, including the type the Diamond/Pro case is made from (PC-ABS, aka ABS-PC or ABS+PC).

I'm not yet convinced that RIT dye will work acceptably long-term on something that is handled a lot and exposed to hand moisture/oil everyday.

I posted about KF when I first got my Diamond, but too busy at work to even think about doing anything. Now finished with project and mostly off for the next 3 or 4 weeks, so will probably try to find a can and test spray on the inside of the case and see what happens.

yeah but than you have to get the tape job perfect to look right..... if it does fade throughout some use than drop it in again since i didnt even use the whole amount of the dye :>

WRT tape, there is a nice groove between the case and camera lens insert. Looks like it would be easy to (1) lay down a piece of thin making tape, (2) run a fingernail or toothpick around the insert to press the tape into the groove, and (3) run a thin pointed Exacto knife around the groove to cut the excess tape. And I bet doing something similar with the USB port wouldn't be too hard either.

WRT fading, re-dying the case doesn't concern me as much as discovering that I have black dye on my hand just before a client meeting.

And ... most importantly ... I'm an a*al perfectionist (unfortunately) so want to do it "right" and "once" :=)

I've been waiting to see Alltel backs show up online, but am tired of waiting, will get bored over the next several weeks, so will probably try the Krylon.
