In Europe, will GPS work on TP?
I'll be in Moscow for a couple of weeks and will probably bring my phone. Knowing I won't get any reception, I know I can at least use the WIFI to browse the internet or check mail if I need to.
Is there a possibility of using the GPS while I'm there if I buy a map of Moscow with a program like Tom Tom or Garmin? |
Re: In Europe, will GPS work on TP?
I know what you are saying, like are the gps over Moscow different, I want to say gps is gps as in universal and should work.

Re: In Europe, will GPS work on TP?
richcracker,
I do not believe that Google Maps will work properly. When I use Google Maps regularly when i'm driving, the GPS signal picks up and the Google Maps are downloaded through the EVDO internet connection. Since EVDO does not exist in Europe, I cannot download the maps on an internet connection unless i'm on WIFI. That defeats the purpose of the GPS since I cannot travel on a WIFI connection. So, what I'm thinking is that maybe the GPS will work if I have preinstalled maps of Moscow/St. Petersburg into my memory card and thus all I need to do is pick up a GPS signal over there. The one thing I've heard is that GPS here in the states and GPS over there is different and not compatible. I'm not sure whether or not that is true but I think the answer might be in the link that Unknown Zone provided. |

Re: In Europe, will GPS work on TP?
GPS WILL WORK OVER THERE. There are 24 satellites, all put up by the U.S. It will work, you will have no problem picking them up. They are not geo. satellites either so the GPS signal you are picking up from Sats now may have been over the North Pole yesterday. It will work, the only issue you would have is maps. Just buy them from Tom Tom and you will be good to go.

I don't know if anyone has answered the OP question. Does GPS work with out a cellular connection? I know that was a problem with the Mogul.
