I got the same problem. Use to happen on my Mogul as well. From what I understand it's your typing speed.

Here's a suggestion - Try Touchpal and type on your screen for a day or two and see if it still does it.

I just noticed something. When I flip the keyboard out, if I press backspace on the keyboard, it doesn't open the menu. WEEEEIRD!

ive noticed a soft reset fixes this issue for me. not sure if it will for anyone else. but worth a shot.

but i dunno if any of the tweaking i did changed anything. or the custom themes lol.

Soft reset doesn't fix for me. Also, I know it isn't related to tweaks, etc. as the issue presented itself the first night I had the device, before I even installed any programs.

Ok, I feel slightly stupid. I know in another thread somewhere I saw the solution for this problem. It works on my device. My brother has one of these now and I can't seem to find where the fix was. Anyone point me in the right direction?

Yeah, my fiance constantly complains to me about this on her device. I can duplicate it consistantly on mine and hers. After thorough testing I can say with confidence it's from tapping on the message in TF3D and not waiting for the message to load. I was having this problem on my device before I started waiting for the txt to load. The only thing I can think of is when programming, they didn't code a procedure to ignore the slide out and the code still fires between clicking the txt and launching the application. It launches the landscape mode of TF3D and when you start typing in the landscape mode, it brings up the dialer which is why some of you are getting the dialer to come up.

I can only vouch for this on Sprint's ROM, for those of you who have a cooked rom, search for HTCVolume.dll for information on how to fix your problem.
