actually, i finally got the search on here to work and it seems if the 'auto correct' is on, then the SYM button doesn't work. oh well, i think i'll stick with auto correct unless someone knows a fix for this.

i hit function then internet button and it pops up opera..working fine

For those the SYM key isn't working for... did you implement the "Old-School Word Correction" registry tweak? In my case, undoing that fix re-enabled the SYM key, and it also allowed me to use the FULL QWERTY software keyboard in alphabetic mode again.

I definitely do NOT recommend using that tweak.

You should be able to fix it by setting the following registry values:

[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Layouts\e001 0409]
"Layout Text"="eT9 IME"
"Ime File="\windows\eT9ime.dll"
