Earphone LED

What is the LED next to the earphone/earpiece at the top of the phone? If you look carefully at sprint2led.jpg you can see what looks like a surface mount LED of somekind under the plastic. Any one know what it does, or better yet how to make it a extra indicator for messages ect?

Its a light sensor for the auto adjusting backlight. This one has been asked a lot.
