OK, I'll start there. I am, however, very nervous about "bricking" my phone. I assume that if you follow the instructions, all should go well.

Correct. Its normal to be nervous about 'bricking' but i can tell you personally I've haven't bricked one yet...
Just make sure you read up first and ask any questions you may have about whatever you dont uderstand

OK, I will certainly do that. Let’s see if I have this correct so far:
1) Before I can do anything to my phone like flash a ROM or tweak it, I must first unlock it with the Raphael_CDMA_HSPL_037.zip file. I download that to my PC and can run it from there once I’m synced to the phone.
2) If I mess anything up I can relock it with: Raphael_CDMA_Relocker.zip and then reinstall the stock ROM Sprint: OS for returning to stock: ftp://ppcgeeks.com/Raphael/Users/ImC...RUU_dumped.rar)
3) After its unlocked, I must then install the RUU.zip file, again can be done from the PC once synced.
4) Then I can add a custom ROM that I find some place else.

Do I have it? I’m sure I’ve missed something.

Close, just a few minor details to iron out...

1. correct !!! first things first, i recommend unlocking ASAP
once you've unlocked you can install custom ROMs and/or upgrade the radio

2. DO NOT RELOCK!!! NEVER RELOCK !!! unless your returning your device, there's no need to relock

3. RUU stands for ROM Upgrade Utility. Its merely a folder on your computer, which usually contains an NBH file.
That NBH file is the ROM

4. Yup. although I recommend flashing via SD Card personally...

Since I just recently switched from Verizon to Sprint, I'm still in the 30 day trial period and am testing the coverage. I want to read up and learn about the tweaking and flashing methods first before I do anything in case I decide I don't want to keep the Sprint service. Not likely b/c service as been fine so far. I don't intent do ever relock unless, as you say, I need to return the phone for service, but I do need to know how to do it, just in case.

IS there any other way to get the advanced config tools other than XDA which leads to Touch Experience which is ridden with malicious code and locks up my IE

I have a question regarding installing a custom ROM. If things do not work out for me for some reason or if I find that I don't like the custom ROM can I do a hard reset and start from scratch with the factory installed ROM and settings?

Yes and no.. Hard Resetting will not re-install the stock ROM... If you do not like the ROM you currently have installed (custom ROM), you can re-load the stock ROM and start with the factory installed ROM and settings
