It takes over for your host's e-mail. The mail gets transferred to Google directly, and stored in their Gmail stores. So it's fully accessible through the Gmail interface with all of the benefits of Gmail. Just like Gmail, though, you have full POP3 and IMAP access to it, which allows you to use it like a plain 'ol vanilla web host e-mail account (with some enhancements, such as Gmail's great spam filtering). Very valuable.

As for changing your address in the e-mail address field, if you do this AFTER your account's fully set up, it shouldn't cause any problems. The username/password field are completely separate from that field, so as long as those are set it shouldn't be trying to log you in with the other one. The way we always have to setup IMAP Gmail is to misspell Gmail in the address field so it doesn't set it up automatically for POP, and then go back after it's set up and fix that. Wouldn't work if that e-mail address was required for signing in.

The problem with synchronizing your mail in the correct folders is that Pocket Outlook currently DOES NOT support the ability to set your root IMAP folder. That feature would map your gmail folders to the correct folders in Pocket Outlook and then you'd get the functionality you're looking for.

The open source IMAP IDLE application mentioned earlier on in the thread works pretty well for pushing mail to your phone, but unfortunately we'll have to wait on Microsoft for root folder assignment.

Flexmail does both... but at the expense of seamless integration with touch flow... which is a bummer.

How much do you want to bet that WM7 wont have either feature?
