IMAP IDLE application!!! Finally!!!

This is something that I've been looking for... for a long time. It enables push (IMAP IDLE) for IMAP mail servers, like gmail. I know at least a few of you have been complaining about the lack of IMAP IDLE support in Pocket Outlook, and the lack of (quality/free etc.) third party apps that add this feature. Well, its finally arrived.

Heres the link:

Enjoy.

Sweet, time to try it and see how it affects battery!

I've been keeping an eye on that - it kinda stopped being developed in September, and I thought it still had issues.

If anyone does try it, post back. I decided once an hour was sufficient for my corporate cowbell to ring ;)

Sorry for my ignorance, but what does this do exactly?

Re: IMAP IDLE application!!! Finally!!!

Implements the IMAP IDLE protocol

IMAP servers can tell IMAP clients when new mail arrives, vs having them poll. This is the standard way of doing "PUSH EMAIL" in IMAP. Microsoft, never one to look at a standard without thinking "how do I do this some other way" made up their own, identical (er, better) but non-standard method for WinMo that only works with Exchange.

This little app logs into your IMAP server for you and just does the IDLE part... when it is notified there is new mail it kicks off the email app to go and get it, and hey presto you have PUSH EMAIL for your IMAP-based email (including gmail)

That's it.

Thanks for the thorough explanation. What major benefits would there be to having this, aside from having emails sent instantly?

Thats really all this push email app does... now ms exchange is a different story.

with that you can sync your contacts, calendar, email, and task instantly and automatically.

Oh, that's good to know as well.

Re: IMAP IDLE application!!! Finally!!!

For me, my gmail gets all these forum updates, so when had push on my gmail account, it would drain my battery in a few hours ;)

So I took off the push software and set it to check every 30 minutes

I will still get this software, because I like the idea... I just won't use it...

There are 2 other free solutions out already that I had used for push gmail... er, make that 3, if you include the one Sprint offers...

Interesting idea, but my suspicion is that this would kill the little battery life we already have...

Yeah, thats exactly what I've been doing, but its kind of a pain because you have to switch over to your gmail account to respond. It's nice to get rid of that intermediate step.

We'll the latest I've seen from the developer was last week saying that he was putting the "finishing touches" on the next release, so it looks like it's still going.

It'll function the same as PUSH and Exchange as far as battery life. So if you're already using PUSH, I doubt you'll notice a difference.

Re: IMAP IDLE application!!! Finally!!!

I have been using this for couple days now and seems to work pretty well . it does occasionally stop working and conflicts if active sync happens to be running. I have been trying a couple different options and so far i like it the best.

I tried the mail2web thing and worked great except for the fact it signed all mail as XXXXX@mail2web.com which didn't work for me so i upgraded to the $4.95 a month plan and you could change your from to address so it would send the way you liked . then i discovered it only would send in plain text not in HTML so that also didn't work for me either.

So far this app is almost there it would me great if you could schedule it to turn off like at night then on in the am.

Re: IMAP IDLE application!!! Finally!!!

Does anyone know if this will handle multiple gmail accounts ? Or just a single one ?

Thanks.

Doesn't work for me...

Re: IMAP IDLE application!!! Finally!!!

I have been using the gmail exchange push capability (http://www.google.com/mobile/products/sync.html#p=winmo) direct from google. While I have not yet tried to use this IMAP solution (I have 2 non gmail IMAP accounts) i will probably try it. I only mention this because of the multiple gmail comments.

Thanks!
