POP Gmail access or IMAP only?
I've searched here and the Diamond forum but couldn't find an answer. When trying to set up Gmail, it only allows me to set the account as IMAP. I prefer to have this account set as POP. Does anyone know how to override the the setup so that I can choose to congifure the account manually? Thanks.

Re: POP Gmail access or IMAP only?
This is a known flaw in Windows Mobile 6.1's auto-email configuration. We figured out the solution back in the day, but if you read Gmail's own support they'll tell you how to get around it, too.
When you're first setting up the account, the first thing it asks for is your e-mail address. If it recognizes the domain name, it automatically configures the rest of the account settings, and in the case of Gmail it uses POP in its configuration. Simply misspell the gmail.com part of your e-mail address to throw it off. Then configure the rest of it correctly and when you're done, go back into your account settings and adjust your e-mail address back (it's used as your "from" address in e-mail you send) and you're in the clear. |
Re: POP Gmail access or IMAP only?
YOu can go back in to server settings and change it after creating it.
But why do you want POP over IMAP? IMAP is so much better. |
Re: POP Gmail access or IMAP only?
Thanks. Got it set up. What is the advantage of IMAP? I've liked POP because it will also allow me to have sent messages show in my outlook at home. Will IMAP do this as well?

Re: POP Gmail access or IMAP only?
Yes, IMAP will sync your read/unread messages, etc. The sent message feature is actually from using their SMTP servers so it happens wether you use pop or imap.
With IMAP you can do lots of stuff and it will reflect the changes. Even starring/flagging the message will show up on all computers you sync with IMAP as well as gmail webmail. |
Re: POP Gmail access or IMAP only?
Is there anyway to receive the email instantly as it comes? The fastest I can do with mail setup is send/receive every 5 minutes.

Re: POP Gmail access or IMAP only?
On a desktop you can use a client that supports IMAP IDLE to get instant email from gmail. I'm not sure if there is anything for IMAP IDLE for windows mobile tho.
