The "word" on how to treat your Touch Pro battery...

Or any PPC, laptop, or any other device with a Lithium Ion battery:

Charge your device as often as possible. If you have a power cord near you and you're staying in one place for a while, use it. Contrary to popular belief (probably ancient theory from back in the Nickel Cadmium days), frequent small charges are much better for a lithium-ion battery than running a full discharge/charge cycle on it. Discharging a Li-Ion battery fully and recharging it puts a lot of strain on the battery and will shorten its life. Another enemy to Li-Ion is heat. If your battery gets extremely hot, stop what you're doing, and let it cool down. Heat is the worst thing for a Lithium Ion battery, and will severely hurt its life.

Here are some resources (mostly for laptops, but they're about Lithium Ion batteries in general):

http://news.tigerdirect.com/2008/02/...-your-battery/
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...4152547AAWBAXW

Hope this helps clear this issue up for some. I know this is a sometimes debated topic.

But a dead battery is just the excuse someone needs to convince themselves (or a significant other) that they need a battery upgrade.

I agree, small charges are generally better than full cycles, but again, the difference is so small that you likely won't ever notice it.

Battery wear is almost entirely a function of work, where by "work" I mean actual joules/sec work.

Re: Heat Heat and more Heat

My phone gets dangerously hot. It happens when I'm streaming internet radio with Kinoma (especially if I'm multi-tasking ie. web browsing) and it also happens when I'm talking on the phone for a while. It got so hot while I was talking on the phone I had to switch to the headset. Today while it was streaming radio I had the phone sitting on a plastic Xbox 360 game case and after a few hours the case started warping and melting. The longer you have the device streaming data it seems the hotter it gets. Definitely think this device could start a fire or cause a bad burn in your pocket if it's there too long. I took the cover off and it seems like most of the heat is coming from the part in between the camera lens and the battery. Expected the heat would be coming from the battery, but it doesn't seem to be coming from there.

Looks like the phone was manufactured 10/7/08.

just a personal judgment from me, but return your phone to wherever you bought it.

Maybe. I got it at Best Buy. But I really don't think it's an isolated incident. I believe it's probably a design flaw in the Pro/Diamond or maybe they just never tested these phones out with the types of scenarios some of us are using them in. At one point I even had Kinoma streaming radio while Sling Player was streaming TV.

Re: Heat Heat and more Heat

I bought mine from Best Buy. It has a Manufactue Date of 10/15/2008.

It doesn't get hot at all, even with heavy use, but the battery life sucks badly. I'm losing 10% battery life every 1-2 hrs when it's IDLING ON STANDBY.

HTC made a real turkey of a battery system with the Touch Pro. I really hope they have a firmware fix like they did with the Mogul.

Are GSM Touch Pro's having this same problem?

Looking at the Touch Pro battery it's the same manufacturer as the old Touch's battery. MACAO COMMERCIAL OFFSHORE.

I've had nothing but good experience with Touch batteries.

I think the fault lies with the Touch Pro phone hardware or firmware, not the battery.

Re: Heat Heat and more Heat

Quick update:

I returned my phone to BB. They replaced it. Both of the CRs at BB, had one of the devices - no heat, no discoloration. My new one is better but still very warm (not hot) and minimal discoloration.
