Best GPS Mapping Software

I got the TP today at Best Buy. I tried using the Sprint Nagativation today for the first time. I love the idea it pulls traffic and reroutes you but I don't think it's worth $10 a month for the service. Anyone care to suggest a software to install that I can use the GPS for free?

Sorry I am coming from the 6700 so I never had GPS built into the phone.

Google Maps and Live Search are both free, and work great with your GPS

Re: Best GPS Mapping Software

yea, live search and google maps are gonna be the only free ones really.

you could get one of the apps that has a one time fee, like TomTom or Garmin XT.

Out of those there is alot of topics on, just not in the Raphael section, just search for best gps software or something to that effect.

I use Garmin Mobile XT and I love it. One thing I really like about it is the frequent updates they post on their site. Sometimes it makes it feel like a totally different program (in a good way). And they are FREE updates.

For free, I suggest MS Live Search. For commercial apps, igo8 is the best IMO.

I really like whatever comes with the phone. Of course I don't have to pay the monthly fee on the service. I would like osmething that didn't require the internet, as the battery just gets destroyed, but I need the space on my SD card too.

I used TomTom6 on my mogul. Worked great.

I'll try to install on my Touch Pro today. USA maps and tom tom took used less than 1GB on my memory card.

iGO 8 works great on the Diamond so should not be a problem on the TP. By far the best GPS program I have used and I have used plenty! It is a great addition to every device with it's fully customizable options, great routing, TTS if you have the correct files, great 3d graphics with mountains and all, buildings in the most popular area's...I can go on and on......

I got it to work this way:

In Google Maps select the Options menu, then GPS Setting. Change the options to "Set Manually" and then use the first drop down menu to select COM4.

The port that you select should match the COM port that shows in the settings for "External GPS" in the "System" tab in the settings panel.

Now back to the menu, select "Use GPS" and it works for me.

the best so far is TOM TOM 7 is amazing... no network connection= not a problem.. you have the maps saved on your sd card or internal storage so no need for signal just gps signal needed

Garmin lets you have traffic information if you have a data connection

Sprint Navigator is great and is free with any data plan.
I have limited (FREEEEE) PowerVision and it includes everything but PictureMail.

Re: Best GPS Mapping Software

So far it seems like Tomtom 7 is the most fluid out of all the gps softwares.

I do have a simple problem with tomtom if anyone knows where to point me. I have address saved to the favorite and named the stars. Is there any way for me to view the favorite address or the destination address?

Also, is there an automatic dim/map color change depending on time for the tomtoms ?

thanks

Sprint Navigation is FREE on all Windows Mobile Phones as of the Official Windows Mobile 6.1 Update if you upgrade to a data plan that has it included.
FREE FREE FREE FREE FREE!

FREE FREE FREE FREE FREE!

Please tell me where you got this information from.
It is free for the current everything plans and also the new SERO.
It is not free for past sero plans or for people who have just data and mins.

Please dont spread this misinformation with "free free free", if you only have data it would give you like a 5 day trial with the option to subscribe to it for a 10$/month fee.

FREE FREE FREE FREE FREE!

yeah, last time i checked i have to pay an extra $10/mo for sprint navigation.
of course, my vision plan only costs $10/mo, so i guess i shouldn't gripe.

what is the best gps program that doesn't require a separate sd card and is available in the US? iGO appears to be euro-centric, and tomtom7 doesn't seem to officially exist according to tomtom.com

am i missing something?

I'm still waiting for mapquest to be updated to work for my current device

Ok, i give up. i'm just gonna spend $10 for a month of sprint nav and hope that gives the devs long enough to update mapquest.
*sigh*

Okay, sez my phone isn't authorized. wtf? okay, so maybe i won't.

Called them up, they had to do something, now it works.
so i'll try this until mapquest is up and running

Boo Boo, on your TP, did you open up Opera and go to http://m.google.com and install MAPS from there? You should be able to download and install the cab file that way. Then, it should work.

At first, it defaults to San Francisco and then you use GPS from the pop-up menu and voila!

HTH,

You don't have to change it to set manually, just let Windows manage it. That's how it's designed to work.

Just tried MS Live Search and holy crap - blows Google Maps out of the water for usability and is much more stable for me.

With Google Maps my phone was crashing twice a day for no reason. MS Live Search has no problems yet and I LOVE speech recognition! Great for when you are driving.

Does MS Live Search have turn by turn voice navigation?

Sadly no, it doesn't :( I don't think any good free ones have turn by turn navigation yet. I really do hope that someday we get that though.

MS Live Search definitely blows Google out of the water though... it's rare that I can say MS impressed me, but it seems to be happening more often the last couple of years :headbang:

Were you able to run it on the touch pro. I have iGuidance 4 and it installed properly and connected to the satellites. but when I was driving it was just not refreshing :(

Every now and then, I tap on the phone screen and it wakes up and then refreshed. kinda got annoying after a while.

Please let me know how you managed to set it up
