how to unlock alltel htc tp and install custom roms

Hello everyone!!,
I'm new to this. I just ordered a alltel htc touch pro and I was wondering if anyone on here could help with this. I would like to know how to unlock my phone to install custom roms. I've taken a look at how to and really don't understand it. All this talk is like gibberish to me, lol. Thank you in advance!
