Touch Pro....can GPS be used without any service at all?
 

I was given a Verizon Touch Pro (XV6850)


I want to use this only as a GPS unit with Garmin XT with custom maps , or similar....with no phone service attached to it at all..

is this possible?

I tested this with Google Maps, but I cannot get a GPS lock.....

1) do I need atleast some phone service attached for this to work?
2) or do I just need to install quickgps or get some settings right

Garmin/Tom Tom use their own maps which are saved on the storage card and dont need internet access like Bling/Google Map to update the maps as you are driving along.

So the answer is "yes" you can use the phone as a stand alone GPS unit with no phone service

Have you tried setting your GPS setting on Com4. Most programs use Com4 for GPS access.

Edit: I saw it was a Verizon model, I know on Sprint we dont have to worry about that..sorry was not thinking..here is a link about unlocking GPS if you are still having issues.

As mentioned Tomtom and Garmin use the maps on the sd card, they have the added possibility of connecting to the internet for weather/traffic data but you can always disable it.

As far as your GPS not working... I would recommend you to stay away from QuickGPS as a recent issue with the file it downloads to your device caused many TPs to have a broken GPS (GPS would freeze the phone as soon as a lock was acquired, or a lock would not be acquired at all), the fastest way to fix it was to flash a new radio. SeasGEE also known as Quick Position (search over XDA) has replaced QuickGPS on my TP and has worked flawless so far.

I have a second VZW TP that I use for Golf distances and there is no servive. I just keep it in airplane mode.

Because you have a Verizon TP, the GPS will be crippled if it has the original ROM. Download the latest update and flash it.

I thought airplane mode cut all communication including GPS?

I have a touch (vogue) that I use as GPS, I turn the phone off, but bluetooth on and I can get a gps lock quite quick with my tomtom software.
