My Holy Grail of TP2 hack-question... Wifi Networking with PS3???

Hey guys (and gals? lol) :)

I know this question has been asked before, and on several forums I have been told it wasn't possible due to a non-supportive Ad-Hoc capability within the Wii (and I think PS3 as well), but that was a while ago, and I know firmware changes happen often, as well as the ongoing hacking and programming from the legions of tech-savvy wizards out there - so I thought I'd ask again.

I do not have true internet service at my home, because I have been using my TP1 for a long time to tether to my machines, but as I have chronicled in the TP1 sub-forum over the past couple weeks, I am being upgraded to a TP2 from the TP1, it's already in the mail according to FedEx tracking...

I'm trying to share my Verizon TP2's Internet connection, through a WiFi hotspot/access point sharing, with the PS3. I have heard of WalkingHotSpot, and another similar program (WMWIFIrouter), but I am unsure if they convert the WiFi signal into an Ad-Hoc connection, and if there is ANY WAY to get the Ad-Hoc to play nice with the PS3, so I can take advantage of all the on-line benefits of the console? (*I've NEVER had, or played a PS3... I JUST BOUGHT ONE YESTERDAY, and I'm so excited about it, but I want to get the full-use advantage from it as well - which means internet)

Does anyone know of a remedy to this problem I'm sure a lot of people face? If not a quick 1-2 solution with a WiFi broadcasting software... what about something like: Hook my phone up to my laptop, turn my laptops (WindowsXP) internet connection sharing ON, and run an ethernet cable from my laptop to the back of my PS3?

Or... Option 3: If WiFi hotspot broadcasting AND Internet Connection Sharing (above) don't work... could I do TP2 -> Laptop -> Wireless Access Point -> Sends out WiFi Signal -> Masks the fact it is an Ad-Hoc -> PS3 online (using something like this: http://cnettv.cnet.com/make-your-lap..._53-28619.html)!! (?)

THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!!! :) :) :)

PS: Doesn't HTC have their own, hopefully now stable, TP2 Internet Hotspot Sharing software that is free (well, free with their $600 phone)?

THIS gives me hope! Thanks so much...

So do I have to custom install a new ROM (mighty) in order to bypass the Ad-Hoc masking? I take it PS3 doesn't like Ad-Hoc either, like the Wii? :(

Verizon shouldn't be that different I would think, as long as the devices are identical and the ROM's are also identical. I just need to figure out the custom ROM installs one my TP2 comes in the mail this week...

FINGERS CROSSED!!!

Eeee-yikes.... :silent:

I used over 6gb of data last month on my bill, and they didn't charge me extra at all, and while at Alltel, I used over 11gb one month before the switch, and never heard anything about it. (I use my cell phone for tethering exclusively, so everything I do on Netflix, Hulu, downloads, Windows Update etc are ALL through my cell phone).

My Verizon bill that came last month with the 6gb of data usage said "Unlimited" beside it on the billing breakdown; - if this has happened to someone from Verizon or elsewhere before, did they successfully get it removed? The WinMo phones are made for tethering, and I've been doing it for a little over 3 years without a hitch on billing, I hope it stays that way! Thanks for the heads up :)

Check this link out... never tried it or heard feedback on it - but it's one of two ways I just found online that PS3 users are claiming works!

1st Option - Ethernet Crossover (here): http://www.ps3chat.com/playstation-3...ut-router.html
2nd Option - Cradlepoint Wifi Access Point Router (here): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16875997433

a few years ago, my brother in law didnt have broadband but his neighbor did. He would just use his neighbors wifi signal. He wanted to somehow connect his xbox to the net. We were able to get it to work by making a crossover ethernet cable ( you can buy one of course) and connect it directly from his laptop to his xbox. Then we set up network sharing on his laptop. there is a tutorial built into windows that will guide you. Just select the option that lets you connect to a computer that is directly connected to the internet. When he wanted to use xbox live, you log on to his neighbors wifi signal, then he would connect to the internet using his xbox. he used it for years until his neighbor moved a few months ago. Im sure you could do the same thing. tether the phone to the laptop or desktop, connect to the net using the phone, then log on to xbox live or the PSNetwork using the crossover ethernet cable. This will not work with a straight through ethernet cable.

I was able to do this also with internet sharing on the phone and ICS on the PC. Tether your phone to your PC. Make sure the PC can get to the internet. You can then bridge the wireless modem with a local area connection and share that through ICS. I was able to get this working with a PS3, a PC and a switch. ICS is not very reliable though.

So I can't take advantage of this wifi sharing program? I just got my HTC Touch Pro 2 in the mail yesterday by the way! :)

I was told an Internet Access Point Router would be easier and more reliable to set up than a Wireless Router; why do you say ICS is not reliable? I have never tried it, I'm just curious. Thanks!

Thanks a lot, this way I don't have to buy extra equipment, just a crossover ethernet cable (is this cable special, or does it just hook right up from my ethernet port to the back of the PS3, and the 'crossover' part is already built in?)

I can get a pretty strong 3G connection on my Touch Pro 2 I just got in the mail, plus I have a netbook that is pretty portable, so I'll turn ICS on and get some magic going hopefully!!

Up next, using my new HDTV as my monitor, and finding a wireless keyboard on line that has a trackpad built in - so I can get some computer usin' fun from the comfort of the couch!

Re: My Holy Grail of TP2 hack-question... Wifi Networking with PS3???

I emailed HTC earlier this week about their custom built Wifi Internet Sharing program that I have seen in the past and I believe might be native on some devices (but not my Touch Pro 2 I activated this week)... and they said it was a Wireless Access Point, NOT an Ad-Hoc!?!? How is this possible... if this were true, it would solve all the problems of internet connectivity and sharing between gaming consoles and cell phones.

I Googled several times, but couldn't find any trustworthy current release downloads of the HTC program, I haven't heard back from their support staff how to download the .CAB file directly to my TP2 yet though, couldn't find the software on their website. I wonder why this app is more well-known? It's made by HTC specifically for their own phones, and it does what Walking Hot Spot and WM Wifi Router both do, for FREE.

ICS is software based router. Once you disconnect your phone you would need to go back and setup the network bridge again. This method wouldn't require any sort of a router just a switch or crossover cable between the ethernet port on the PC and PS3.

I think I have HTC app your referring to, XDA Wifi internet sharing, if so this appears as AD HOC and not an access point.

That's what I thought! How could a rep for HTC be so ill-informed!? If it was able to create a true outgoing wifi access point, I could just hit connect, throw the Touch Pro 2 on the couch beside me, and get on Playstation Network and game the day away! Geeez... come on HTC, where's the hiring process?

Thanks for your help! I am going to try downloading the HDA HTC wifi app since HTC won't tell me how to download it myself; hopefully it works alright, because this whole 21-day trial thing with winmo wifi router is getting old, lol.

I've gone ahead and upload the install cab to the thread. If this is not ok someone please remove it and my apologies.

Re: My Holy Grail of TP2 hack-question... Wifi Networking with PS3???

I was wondering if you got it to work for you? If you didnt, let me know and i will see if i can simulate what you are trying to do and write it up

If you look closely at the ends of a normal "straight through" ethernet cable, the color of the wires match the other plug, but on a crossover ethernet cable, you will notice that 4 of the colored wires are swapped (crossed). there are 4 pairs of wires (8 wires total) but only 2 pairs (4 wires)that are important in most cases. One set is data Recieve/In (+) and (-) and data transmit/out(+) and (-). If you connected 2 or more devices through a router, then the router will swap the transmit/receive wires internally for you, if you connect two devices directly, you normally will need a crossover ethernet cable.

I was able to use a normal Ethernet cable to share my cell phone connection through my laptop with my PS3; and have been using it successfully about a week now. The only complaint I have, is that it seems every single time I turn my PS3 off and back on, I have to go through the Internet Connection Settings again for it to successfully gain the needed IP address and connect to the web for me to sign-in to the PS3 account.

**One thing I did want to mention, is that I am having BIG ISSUES with one thing: The Firewall, evidently has to be completely turned off, for ANY of this to work. I wish there was an exception to this rule, so I wasn't left so open to attack and hacking - if there is, someone please tell me.

***LAST THING - I have been 100% unable to use the Built-In ICS through tethering on my HTC Touch Pro since day1. I have been forced to rely on selecting the USB to PC function on WM wifi Router... but the 21-day trial is almost expired. My original TP1 worked like a champ, but every time I click the "USB to PC" tethering program on my TP2, it says "END DATA CALL." (?)

I would LOVE to hear more about this... so you were able to sign in to your Play Station Network, and even play online, by sharing your HTC TP2's MightyROM included WiFi sharing app!?

I just used a regular old Ethernet cable I had laying around from past service providers, and it worked like a charm. I have yet to figure out how to keep the settings from reverting and needing set back up every time I disconnect my laptop and power off my PS3 though.

Also, I now own a Droid2, and like it a lot, but just wish someone somewhere would release a WiFi sharing app with INFRASTRUCTURE MODE so it doesn't show up to consoles as an Ad-Hoc Connection! :(
