No Bluetooth PAN tethering?
All of the tethering threads I've been reading for the past couple weeks here have to do with USB tethering. What of Bluetooth tethering on the TP2? I just upgraded from a Mogul to a TP2 a week ago and assumed that the same WM hacks for tethering would work but just to be sure I followed the tethering steps listed here with my TP2 but it won't connect with my laptop. Before/after comparison:
Before: With the Mogul I would use the ICS app, select Bluetooth as the connection type, then hit connect. It would always prompt me to make BT visible but I hit "No" because the devices had already been paired successfully. Then on the MBP I would find the Mogul in the BT device list and select "Connect to Network" (or something like that) and the two would connect and I'd have internet on the MBP. Unfortunately I can't recall which hacks were used for the Mogul as it was nearly 2 years ago I set up BT tethering for my Mogul (and it had worked the entire time). After: On the TP2 I installed just the hacked ICS CAB and selected BT as the connection type and it went to the BT settings controls where it then said my MBP did not have Bluetooth PAN capabilities even though my Mogul used the BT PAN just fine on the MBP. I also noticed that when synching the devices the "Connect to Network" doesn't appear in the BT device menu like it did for my Mogul. So I went and did the registry tweaks also listed here but the Bluetooth option doesn't even appear in the connection type dropdown anymore! I'm guessing the two devices have different BT stacks or something and the new one isn't allowing the MBP to synch to its network? I was about to give up and just use the HTC wifi router but that CAB won't install, it says I don't have access rights to install (doesn't the RAPI hack override that?). I'd much rather just use the BT tethering instead of wifi because BT has used less battery than wifi in the past. |
Re: No Bluetooth PAN tethering?
The PAN profile simply is not present in the Widcomm stack on the TP2. All previous devices since the XV6600 have had an MS bluetooth stack. Additionally, it is very possible that the Widcomm stack does not play nice with the MS ICS app.

Re: No Bluetooth PAN tethering?
I figured it might have been a different BT stack that didn't want to react the same. Has anyone found a workaround or does the MS stack still work with the rest of the stock Sprint TP2 ROM?

Re: No Bluetooth PAN tethering?
Okay I've been searching forever here and at xda looking for the drop down bluetooth pan option on my TP2 (verizon)... during my search I came a cross a pdf from TMobile that shows how to establish a bluetooth pan connection... why if they can do it, can't we?
Now granted I may have missed something where we are able to do this, but for the life of me I can't find it... bluetooth dun is about all I can find, no pan... Do we have the ability or not? Edit: I was able to bluetooth using a very old ICS program but Verizon intercepted it somehow and would only allow me to view their sign up page when trying to google. Thanks in advance! |
Re: No Bluetooth PAN tethering?
I have no great difficulty tethering over Bluetooth on my Sprint TP2. The main annoyance is that I have to make sure the EVDO connection is active (e.g., by checking for new email) right before entering the Internet Sharing app.
When I first got the TP2, I foolishly installed that ICS replacement advertised in this forum. Wrong move! That is only for the other carriers, who have goofed around with Internet sharing in order to try to catch tetherers. (I had to hard-reset to get rid of that garbage.) With Sprint, all that's required to tether is the usual Internet Sharing Fix, just like on the Touch Pro (and the Mogul if I recall correctly), that jiggles a few Registry entries. But the TP2 provides an extra convenience over the TP. On the TP, I would have to start Internet Sharing on the phone, then separately make a Bluetooth connection on the laptop computer. On the TP2, I start Internet Sharing over Bluetooth; the phone asks which laptop I want to offer this service to; I choose the laptop; and the TP2 establishes the connection. |

I would prefer the bluetooth pan... I found a bluetooth pan manager in the windows folder and am able to connect it to the laptop and get internet but when I try to surf Verizon catches it and takes me to a default signup page, telling me that I do not have that type of data plan and I need to sign up for one in order to use the bluetooth pan option. I could also just USB tether too, but I don't see what the big deal is about the pan on the TP2 spouse uses it on the Vogue... works real nice on that phone. |
