What is GPS navigation function like?

Droid is making a big deal out of its free google maps navigation capability.
I'm puzzled why it should be such a big deal when I've seen it from iPhone already.
Even my XV 6700 has limited google maps capability after I installed the google maps app for Windows Mobile, although, due to the lack of a GPS receiver, it does not offer turn-by-turn navigation.
Doesn't Touch Pro2 have navigation function comparable to Droid (use of google maps, turn-by-turn navigation, street view, etc.)?

google maps navigation is google's new turn by turn navigation software. the only big whoop about it is that it's free and uses google maps. there're free apps on wm that do the same thing but use their own maps.

i see. So even with the free "google maps for Windows Mobile", you wouldn't have turn-by-turn navigation on TP2? I had assumed that I'd have turn-by-turn only if my XV6700 had GPS in it.

Google maps does not include turn by turn navigation. It will create directions for you, but you will have to know where to turn at. It will not alert you when its time to turn.

Bing is a bit better. It will beep at you when time to turn, but otherwise, nothing else.

you can get turn-by-turn navigation with free apps like amAze 4.5 but the google maps application won't do it

I still like Telenav... I know... not everyone has a Sprint phone with a data plan... Especially the sero crowd. I do.
And I love it.
I'm sure the Verizon version is not too shabby.

Google Maps also doesn't have Voice Control !!

You just say "Find Nearest Best Buy" and you are on your way.

A co-worker has it, it's by far the best. It will preload maps along a route too in case it loses cellular signal.

Integrates real time traffic for free too. And will let you route around it.

think the Google turn by turn on the droid phone is big because it is completely integrated with the phone. You can access a contact with an address...then access your turn by turn to get directions to that contact. Seamlessly. Currently on our TP2...you contact address takes you to that location on the map...but doesn't generate directions (audio) as you drive toward you destination.

Telenav and some others do that...but they require you to pay a fee for monthly service...or they require you to purchase maps for them.

I, too, am partial to telenav. It works well enough for me.

Integration with street view is the part that excites me most about Google Maps Nav. I remember back when they first came out with street view, I immediately thought it'd be awesome to have that on turn by turn GPS to show at least at your destination, if not as you go. There are a lot of other great solutions for turn by turn GPS on WM, but that would be a killer feature.

Well, that and being free.
