Huge leap in BW speed going from TP to TP2, any idea whats going on?

I've had about 15 different HTC devices since 2002 and one of my main concerns(even obsession) was always improving the download speed on all of them. When i finally got TP2(swap for TP1) recently i have immediatly noticed that i no longer have interuptions for buffering when listening to my favorite programs on WunderRadio or Resco radio(BBC mostly) as well as youtube videos played flawlesly when compared to my previous (customised with all imaginable speed hacks) TP(1). When unlocker was released i was ready to unlock my TP2 and flash custom ROM as i always have on all my previous HTC's. After downloading the unlocker i dont know why but i decided to test speed on Sprint stock(6.1) ROM before actually unlocking it. When i saw the numbers that http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed spit out at me i almost fell out of my chair. After that I kept testing and retesting everywhere for few days and unbeleavably it was not a one time fluke. The best result is posted in my signature(done on PRL 60656 with Sprint stock 6.1(no speed tweaks whatsoever), tethering(for test purposes only) on Ubuntu 9.10(Jaunty)), results in Vista and W7 are much lower but i am still averaging half of speed in signature which is about twice the best speed that i ever got on TP(or still getting on my Sprint Diamond(custom 6.5 ROM-same Ubuntu). Needless to say i am happy as a chainik and decided to put off unlocking and stick with stock ROM for now for fear of loosing this miracle. No more laggy youtube or annoying buffering messages for me! Anyone else experienced this?

I know I couldn't believe the difference in teathering speed

Its not just tethering(since if it was i would not be that excited) but i guess they both go hand in hand. Good to see i am not the only one noticing this, and i know Sprint didnt upgrade 3G in my area (Boston) during my switch from TP to TP2 since my diamond still gets same speeds as it did 3 month ago

Ok, then maybe you guys can help me out. I did a speedtest today on my Touch Pro 2 tethered to my Vista Laptop with the stock rom. The only thing I've done was add a few customizations for the background, freeing up ram, and the Sprint Tweak Clean Up posted in the sticky at the beginning (I'm new here. I've only had my phone just under a week. This is the speed I'm getting and this is the average:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/627437711.png

Is there something I need to check or something that can be tweaked to get it up to the speeds you're posting? I really appreciate the help because, although I absolutely needed to tether, more speed is definately desired. Thanks in advance.

*Edit - Oh, and I'm currently in Hampton, VA and it was about 9am when I ran this test.

Re: Huge leap in BW speed going from TP to TP2, any idea whats going on?

Seems like you may have picked a bad time to run the test. I'd guess that at 9AM, people are using the data network heavily as that is the start or close to the start of the work day, so imagine how many people would be checking email and other things on their phones at the start of the day. The speed you get can vary from test to test sitting in the same location. Can you try again at what may be a less busy time, like earlier in the morning or in the evening?

I think something may be up with the speed test in Ubuntu- EVDO RevA max downstream is 3.1 Mbps and that's considered the burst max. 7.99 seems like a bit of a reach :)

However, tethering speeds as well as internet speeds do appear to be improved.

Re: Huge leap in BW speed going from TP to TP2, any idea whats going on?

I will try that to get a more accurate measure. Thanks for the info imnuts.

I'm actually replying to this post while being tethered just so I can test the stability and for basic browsing it's fine. But the pages still take a little bit of time to load. Something like yahoo.com takes several refreshes for it to come in clean.

From your experience, is there anything that could bog down connection speed on the TP2? Or maybe another means of testing the connection? I used mobile speed test and I barely got 472 KB on the 1MB test. And looking at your sig, that's blazing to me. lol!

whoa, thats weird. havent seen this on mine, maybe processor?

Re: Huge leap in BW speed going from TP to TP2, any idea whats going on?

I've gotten everywhere from ~700KBps up to the speed reported in my signature, all sitting within a 50ft area (parking lot at work). I tend to get anywhere from 1-2MBps on average though, so it's not like what you're seeing is all that much slower. I was also testing at 5-7PM time as well, likely improving things.

Re: Huge leap in BW speed going from TP to TP2, any idea whats going on?

Well, I've heard that Verizon's data speeds are dramatically faster than Sprints average data speeds anyways, and I'm on Sprint. So, maybe I'm expecting too much from my provider. lol! I don't know.

Here's another example:

This is faster than what it was before and this was about 12pm. I'm not sure if this is normal.

Re: Huge leap in BW speed going from TP to TP2, any idea whats going on?

I doubled my tcp window size and I get good speeds no matter what time of day it is.

bbaker901 11-19-2009 03:25 PM

Re: Huge leap in BW speed going from TP to TP2, any idea whats going on?

Need a little help with how to do that. I've been searching through the forums and couldn't find anything. All I've seen is "increase tcp window", not "how to increase tcp window"

Also, I've been doing my mobilespeedtest runs in the Opera browser and not IE. Would that make a difference as well?

bbaker901 11-19-2009 04:53 PM

Re: Huge leap in BW speed going from TP to TP2, any idea whats going on?

Ok, I found out how to increase the window, and I doubled it and I still can't break that .71 mps mark. I'd accept it if that was the norm, but I have a feeling it can move faster than that on this sprint connection, when I look at what people are posting in these forums.

Re: Huge leap in BW speed going from TP to TP2, any idea whats going on?

Here's another update. I ran speedtest's at 11pm at night and I was able to get up to 1.01 mps download speeds. My question is, is that the benchmark? I have been averaging between .50 and .70 mps download speeds throughout the day and 1.0 mps speeds in off times. I've seen people post 2.0 mps speeds on their sprint evdo connection and that would be awesome if I could attain that or more if possible.

Re: Huge leap in BW speed going from TP to TP2, any idea whats going on?

Depends a lot on the area you're in, in town less than 15mins drive from me i never break 1m barrier(tried on about 100 occasions over span of a year-diff times). In my homeTowm - all is well so i am happy. Also to answer the PM's the speed that i have in my signature IS NOT my regular speed - its the best speed i have ever recorded, but i average quite well as well:)

Though for Rev. A, you can't beat what I got. Mine was taken less than a hundred feet tethered to my Diamond on my laptop.

Re: Huge leap in BW speed going from TP to TP2, any idea whats going on?

Last week I bought a used htc 6800 did a hard reset, didn't load the sprint portion, did a few of the reg edits for tether, loaded the wifirouter cab. I did the same edits as I did on my 6900 except the wifirouter. I have both phones active and have swapped back and forth on ics several times over a couple of days.
While my laptop is connected to the speed test site I swap phones on usb ics and rerun the speed test. The 6800 downloads, while tethering, at about 1.5 meg while the 6900 downloads about .300 meg. Thesse are consistant readings. The 6900 reading is consistant with a previous 6900. Anyone have a good rationale?

Eric, I reread the thread and I didn't see what you're referencing unless it's post 12. In that case and if I'm thinking along the same lines the KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curren tVersion\Internet setting on all my phones is 4.

Make it to the 2nd paragraph and you'll see why I posted in the TP2 forum.

My In-Laws use their Sprint Touch Diamond for their laptop connection, exclusively. I set them up with a stock rom with stealth tethering. it was very adequate. I was recently told that it was slow. OMG, it was almost non-existent. I tested with mobilespeedtest.net and got about 50k/sec. I got a new PRL download, rebuilt with OMJ ROM and no difference.

I have Energy ROM on my wife's TP and my TP2. I checked them to see how much better we were, possibly to give one of these phones to the in-laws, and ....... same results. Three different phones, two ROM's (three if you count the stock Sprint I started with on the Diamond).

Anyone know of any general Sprint download issues or policy changes or ...... ????? I thought maybe they had to borrow from 3G to get the speed they needed for 4G. We're in Kansas City BTW.

The 4g towers are placed next to the 3g towers and usually use the same bandwidth pipe yes..but I don't think 4g is the issue..Here is what I think caused it..before many consumers bought dumb phones..most of those dumb phones did not support Rev A...so most of Rev A was used by us exclusively...now that every device effectively has Rev A and increase use of bandwidth its much more bottled down :/

You can try also flashing a custom radio..that might help a bit oreo :/

Wirelessly posted (htc Pocket PC: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.11) Sprint MP6950SP)

It could be any number of things. Like gTen said increased usage, or interference from something close by, weather, changes in network equipment or software, and/or other possible issues.

Re: Huge leap in BW speed going from TP to TP2, any idea whats going on?

I've updated the radios on all 3 phones, more than once to try to find best fit there. I haven't done all the signal measurements, but I do see voice quality change with different radios. There's really only so much time you can dedicate to these types of activities. My in-laws are about 10 miles away and things work about the same there. I did get my PRL updated in my TP2 last night and that sent me from <100k to between 200k and 500k . I'm going to go down that road next on the other 2 also.

Re: Huge leap in BW speed going from TP to TP2, any idea whats going on?

I bought a used Sprint TP1 to put on Boost for exclusive data use @ 35 cents per day tethering to a laptop. I did speed tests and got these results in an area close to a freeway with great signal strenth. In real world application these work just fine for me. If I would have known the TP2 was better at data speeds I would have purchased one for my car.
