Is there a free backup utility that works?

Hey fellow tp2'rs
I am on a budget since I dropped 450.00 on my Sprint TP2 and am now saving just in case the Adonis becomes a reality. lol.
Anyway. I am looking for a basic backup utility tool or cab that works on our phones. I know about SPB and SPRITE and I have heard of a couple of others. However, those cost money. I am looking for FREE. Thanks.

I use PIM Backup - http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-...ckup-v1-9.html ... it does everything i need it to.

You can also sign up for microsoft's My Phone service, I tried it out and it's pretty neat but eh I don't want to waste my battery with syncs.

I've been using Dashwire a lot when I kept having to re-flash MightyRom to my Touch Pro when I would have to replace a faulty one every other month. :-P It's free, and I've found it works remarkably well!!

if you just want simple contact, text, mail, calenda backup, you can try the free microsoft my phone service. It's backed up on a remote server, which could be good or bad :P

Can you provide a link that confirms your statement? Also, Dashwire does contacts, photos...it does not restore programs. [-X

An exchange account would do what you want. And there are some free ones available.

Thank you all for your replies... I hit all your buttons so none of you would feel left out. I just reset my phone and loaded all my cabs in date sequence. It only took my lunch hour. And I will be using Microsoft myphone to restore my contacts. My pictures are in my memory card anyway. And best of all... No more bugginess.
Now it looks just like I wanted it to.

I just downloaded Sashimi to automagically install everything after I reflash.

Makisu is an app that comes with it that will generate an XML file for all your email configuration data.

Here's a description of the functionality of this FREE app!!

I haven't tried it out yet, but it looks pretty sweet so far! :toothy7:

PIM backup can do contacts, pix, texts, emails, cab files, ringtones, you name it, hope that helps. and its free

Re: Is there a free backup utility that works?

I remember a year or so ago there was a program called HTCBackup that was free and I also catch myself using flexilis, PIMbackup, and Microsoft myphone.

It NEVER hurts having a couple backup solutions especially when you have a LOT of contacts.

HOWEVER....

I would suggest going with a commercial software like SPB Backup....I know it isn't free however its probably one of the best if NOT THE BEST backup software for your device.

Re: Is there a free backup utility that works?

Anyone actually try restoring from PIMBackup to a Touch Pro 2? I tried to restore info from my old Touch Pro and it refused to back up the Calendar info.

I ended up figuring out I had to goto the "Today" settings and disable TouchFlo 3D in order to have PIMBackup do a complete restore.

Anywho, it kind of scared me, so I use Microsoft MyPhone as well, a back up for my back up.

Re: Is there a free backup utility that works?

i use dashwire, the only thing to keep in mind with it is that if you have your contacts backed up to your SIM when you do a restore with dashwire youll endup with dupes in your contact list

Re: Is there a free backup utility that works?

I'm a huge fan of using MyPhone for my general backup, and I schedule it for once per day so not to waste battery (and actually that once per day is actually per night while it's on the charger anyway). But that doesn't stop me from making my own backup using PIMBackup and ActiveSync because you never know when a cloud service (regardless of vendor) will up and disappear on you.

Re: Is there a free backup utility that works?

I just want to chime in and mention that I use MyPhone with a SDCard backup made by Sashimi.

I used to use DashWire, but MyPhone has upped the game and it works very well. U dont have to let it auto sync, and it just sync weekly to make sure im on top of it.

Re: Is there a free backup utility that works?

I am not going to read through more than the 1st page now, as I've used them all, but I have to say SPB Backup is weel worth the money, and I am no longer willing to pay for Resco or many other things I have paid for. But becuase of the SUPREME IMPORTANCE of full backups before doing installs of software (if you are like me, you install a lot on some days/nights), I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH how important it is to be be able to quickly unwind things if they go sour. The new version of SPB Backup does a full backup in less than 5 minutes, so I do one after every few installs of software, even if their isn't an obvious issue yet. And I ALWAYS do a nightly scheduled backup, which also ends with a soft-reset.

NOT having and properly using this software (SPB Backup, "maybe" Sprite is as good, but evidence is not so far) is the reason for so many posts THAT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED if people backed up the way I do. All the crying "I'm afraid I'll have to hard-reset", etc., goes AWAY if people follow this procedure. Dashwire, PimBackup, etc., DO NOT SOLVE all the issues, the just keep it from being a complete catostophe. But jusdicious use of SPB Backup makes it PAINLESS, anything you.

I'm making this strong statement because I'm beginning to think that people who ignore this are a leading contributor to the overload this site is seeing.

Re: Is there a free backup utility that works?

i use google sync for contacts/calendar, my phone for everything else which backs up nightly, SASHIMI for installs/reg edits, SPB Backup which also backs up right after my phone nightly, and i keep an image of my sd card on 2 different computers.

might be overkill but as stated you never know what could happen. i use my phone for my business and cant afford to lose ANYTHING on it. With how i have it now it would be virtually impossible to ever lose anything.
