While texting with hardare keyboard, it keeps adding a period if I double space?
 

This has been driving me crazy, so here is my question, while using the TP2 hardware keyboard for texting how do you change it so that it does not insert a period every time I make an extra space? I tend to double space and it keeps adding a period in every two or three words. I have checked under settings/ input and anywhere else I could find. Thank you for any help on this :)

well, when do you use a double space? after the end of a sentence. htc is just saving you some time lol. im sure theres a way to turn it off, but yeah, thats the logic behind it.

You know, I hadn't double spaced until I read this thread. Interesting feature, sorry I don't know how to turn it off. It only seems to do it at the end of sentence though.

hahaha... This was really setting me off too. You know... Sorry I don't have an actual solution for you. But my experience is that I had to slow down a bit and relearn this keyboard. I come from a TP and I also had a hardware keyboard on my text pager my old company gave me. They were both cramped for space and now that I have this great big keyboard I didn't know what to do with all that space. My issue resolved itself in a matter of a few days to a week. I now have had my phone about 6 weeks and don't have that issue any more.

Why in the world would you put a double space in the middle of a sentence? Are you one of those people who writes sentences like, OMG !!! I AM SO LUKING FOUR U111!!

Anyhow, there appears to be no conceivable reason where someone would be putting a double space and not wanting a period, but look through the registry as that is where the setting would be. I highly doubt anyone is going to take any time to try to "fix" this for you.

Hey, I don't put the double space on purpose, just I don't think it makes the space and hit it again once in a while, but then instead of a space its a period in the middle of my sentence :( I mean you can control if it automatically adds a capital for the first word of each sentence under the input settings. I just can't see why there is not setting to stop the automatic period from happening. Does that make it a little clearer Nagrom? You sarcasim certainly did not help. As I saw from peoples replies, I am not the only one that would like to resolve this. Thanks to all!

I love this feature! I'll type like I'm trying to break the keyboard, but I don't double space in the mid dle of a sen tence. .

The sarcasm was because you are asking for a fix for something that does not need to be fix. Real people don't have problems with putting double spaces in the middle of their sentences or words. Just don't hit the space bar 2 times and your "problem" is solved. You will also notice I told you where to look, but evidently you are too lazy and want someone else to do it for you.

This was without a doubt one of the most overdue features for windows mobile. It was miserable going back and forth between BlackBerry and WinMo and not having that feature.

Testing is full of misspellings, deliberate and otherwise, why worry about it? I'm sure a solution has been suggested that works, but isn't that part of the charm? I know you are embarressed becuase you are a male teacher texting your female students, but don't worry, they won't think you're dumb, nor will the cops monitoring it all. (j/k) :o)

Wow, the aggressiveness over this topic is a little ridiculous. I know exactly where the op is coming from. I have 2 TP2's, 1 has a very sensitive space bar. Sometimes when shooting a quick text, I'm not always using strict grammar. So this. happens a lot. So while I don't mind the. double space that much, sometimes. it's a little hard for people. to follow my texts if I miss the period HTC added. for me. I would love. to turn this feature off.

I can honestly say I've had the phone for 6 wks and have yet to have any periods in the middle of my sentences, but thank you for bringing this feature to my attention.

Its funny, some other people seem to understand and it bothers them also. If it does not affect you, why don't you get a life and move to the next thread. I see threads on here that don't seem to have any purpose for me, but I don't stop and offer useless sarcasm. Thanks to everyone for the input. I was just wondering if there was a quick cab to fix this floating around as I am only going on my second year with Windows Mobiles devices and have read through almost every thread that looked relevant.

i dont see how this is any different from the people that wanted the sleep button disabled when the keyboard is open. all they have to do is not hit the sleep button right??

its not stupid at all. i guess you never make mistakes when u type but this happens to me all the time and it would be nice if there was a fix

I get your point, but that is totally different.

It is almost impossible for me to use the hardware KB without the top button disabled as the way I hold it my finger curls around & rests right on that button.

The KB period thing on the other hand, I never even realized it did that until I read it here......

i understand that and it wasn't really a comment directed to you. but i have never hit the keyboard by mistake and usually if i'm texting i turn off the backlight with the keyboard out so i dont have to keep sliding it.

basically just saying to each his own, but there was no need for the put down comment earlier.

Anyone happen to figure out if there's a registry key that controls this? Can anyone provide guidance on where to look and what kind of naming schema to look for?

Auto-periods are particularly annoying when ending sentences with smiley faces or other emoticons, no one wants this:

"That was fun :-). Wanna do it again?"

We want this:
"That was fun :-) Wanna do it again?"

Justified enough? Perhaps the OP would have received a warmer response if his username wasn't "Richcop", (few people like the rich or cops, having both in there is just asking for trouble ;-)

maybe the OP meant when you end your sentence and put the necessary punctuation mark. but when you double space to start the new sentence, the second spacing automatically adds the period. my phone didnt start doing this 'til recently and it was bugging me. thought i was the only one having this "issue". but it with me though, it doesn't happen all the time. but it does happen each time on facebook using my phone.

people type how they are going to type. i text differently to my girl than i do to a buddy or my mom. its all in your relationship to the person. and yes i am a male, and i have typed like that to my girl, mainly to make fun. normally when texting or typing, i do this...where i add a couple periods at the end of a sentence...mainly to make it easier for some of my friends to understand the end of a sentence.

how about when you start a text, get distracted and forgot you put a space in after a word? this is not just a concern for one person, as you can see from the other posts in this thread. what if they are trying to do a quick text and dont wanna fuss with the period? or on a longer text and look up at something and forgot they put a space? we are human after all.

asking for a fix that does not need to be fix? lol, guess you are a real person...mistakes happen. and it might need a fix to somebody, other than you. hmmm. how many roms have you used? bet you found some stuff that needed "fixing" yet wasnt a concern to the chef.

or what if, like some people are saying, they have a sensitive spacebar, or type really hard on the keyboard and do it on accident, guess its their fault that there is a feature they dont like, shame on them, shame on them.

this is a built in shortcut feature. it can also be found on the bb. and u guys are mean! be nice! i dont know if it can be changed or not...i would look for shortcut settings.

Thanks for figuring this out, I've been going nuts wondering why this was happening. I think I have a twitchy thumb and always get the period.

I tried remapping the keys with Rhodium keyboard config, but it can't override this function. Tried everything and would love for this to be eliminated.

The period is right by the spacebar...how much time could this actually save?

I like this feature even if i do get an accidental period once in a while.
i had my phone for about 2 months before even figuring out that this feature exsisted.

for those that didnt know...if you long press a letter on the keyboard it will automatically capitalize that letter.

i type 100mph sometimes & since i have the tendency(only on a tp2)to double tap characters this feature is a p.i.t.a ... that whole double tapping thing is another issue in itself because i dont think i really do double tap keys but both tp2s seem to have me "tyypping likke this" sometimes

I also do not like this "feature". my spacebar seems a little tighter than the rest of the keys and I wind up double spacing by accident alot. Hope someone can find a tweak for this setting.

I feel the pain as well. If someone is looking to fix this problem, I would be particularly interested in the ability to:
* see a complete list of these features
* selectively turn some of these features on or off

Well guess I'll drop in my 2 cents. Every device is different. I have 3 TP 2's on my account (Wife; Brother-in-law; myself) On my TP 2 the space bare is insanely sensitive. I add a periods that I don't want all the time. On my wife's I never have the problem, nor have I had the issue when typing on my Brother-in-law's TP 2.

Even when testing side by side (just the space bar) it jumps 2 spaces when it is hit once...I am moving to the Evo next month so I am not all that concerned anymore but it would have been nice to have the ability to disable the feature.

I have the same problem with this. My spacebar is a bit tight and double presses often. not only does it insert a period, but it capitalizes the next word becaus it thinks I'm starting a new sentence. So it can change the whole meaning of what I am trying to say. There must be a registry setting for this somewhere. Help please! :)
