VZW TP2 - No Warning When Battery Is Low?

I've been using my TP2 a fair amount - just got it, still learning, playiing, etc. - so I've been running down the battery fairly quickly. A couple of times, it apparently just ran out completely and turned off. As far as I know, there were no audio notifications, vibration, etc. I had put it to sleep, and was in my front pocket both times this happened.

I looked completely through the User Manual, and saw no mention one way or the other about whether or not this is the way it's supposed to behave.

Anybody with any insight on this? I'd prefer to be able to get an audible warning so I could plug it on, etc.

Thanks!

Did u try Start/Settings/Personal Tab at the bottom/Sounds & Notifications/ Click the notification tab at the bottom, click the drop down menu & go to Low Battery and enable it?

Thanks for the reply and suggestion, but I've been there, and the drop-down options (for this Verizon TP2) do not contain an entry for Low Battery. Multiple other options, but not Low Battery.

Anyone with a Verizon phone have this, or know if this setting might be somewhere else?

If u have voice command, it will announce that the battery is low or if u use Phone Alarm it give u the option to add a low battery alert... You can also use an app like DCI battery that puts a strip @ the top of your taskbar that change colors (from green to yellow & finally red) as your battery depletes

Thanks again, but nope - no options for this under Voice Command. Also, I don't see "Phone Alarm" on my device (is this a 3rd party)?

DCI battery wouldn't have helped either, as apparently my phone died while in my pocket, in sleep mode, display off.

It's hard for me to believe that a phone like this wouldn't have the ability to generate an audible alarm when the battery is running low.

Any Verizon TP2 users that can provide any insight here?

To enable in Voice Command check the Status box & yes PhoneAlarm is 3rd party....

If u use Voice Command, click notifications & select Annouce notifications using Bluetooth handsfree if available & uncheck during free time if u wish

Thanks, and I hate to sound like a broken record, but Status was already checked, and there are no options available there that show Battery Alarm, either under Status, or any other of the entries.

And I already have notifications configured as you suggest.

It's really looking like this is a difference between Verizon and your Sprint TP2.

No problem! =D>

At least you tried. Like I said, it may be a Verizon thing, and I just need to wait for one of them to chime in.

Thanks for the report. And yeah, event sounds is set to "on."

I've only had the phone a week and a half, and it's only run out on me twice. It was in my pocket both times, and it is possible it beeped and I didn't hear it (although at least one of the times, I was in a quiet room, and should have heard it).

Guess I'll try to run it down and see what happens. Let me know if you find anything else.

what hacks and/or programs have you installed, if any?

Minimal- I've been quite conservative. Epocates, GPS Weather Radar, CorePlayer, netcf 3.5. Some free MS games.

I looked at the registry and it looks like the path for the lowbatt.wav file is incorrect for the notification. It points to lowbatt instead of \Windows\Lowbatt.wav. This is inconsistent with the way the other notifications are setup. You can test my theory by installing the attached .cab file. I'm not guaranteeing anything, but please let me know if it works.

My VZW TP2 just beeped at me and gave a popup notification that the battery was getting low, I think it starts at 10%, then you get another at ~5% or so.

Thanks. I've downloaded the file, but in the interest of minimizing changes to my device, will verify what my TP2 does when the battery gets to 5 and 10% before installing it.

Although, come to think of it, I kind of remember it getting low last week-end while I was using it, a warning message flashed on the screen, but I don't recall (not 100% certain) an audible warning.

I'm also planning on installing a Registry editor this week-end, so maybe I'll just have a look to see what's there to begin with.

Thanks again.

Interesting...

Can you check the registry setting 8notime refers to above, in terms of whether it refers to 'lobatt' or 'Lowbatt.wav'?

Thanks.

Re: VZW TP2 - No Warning When Battery Is Low?

I checked the value that is changed with the cab, and mine is set to just "lowbatt" not what the cab is setting it to. However, there is another value that is set to "\Windows\lowbatt.wma" that isn't being changed by the cab posted. The key is HKCU\ControlPanel\Notifications\{A877D663-239C-47a7-9304-0D347F580408} and Wave=\Windows\lowbatt.wma

Interesting. I'm going to let my battery run down today and see what happens. I'm busy with some other stuff, but hope to install a Registry Editor, to check this out as well.

Good catch. I missed that regkey when I was looking last night. Based on your saying it works, and another poster saying it works, I doubt my reg change would have any affect. I would say it's more likely the system volume was turned very low or off when the OP's battery hit 10%. This is especially easy to do if the single volume control is set to off in the TF3D sound settings because you can then control system sound volume level and phone volume level separately.

Re: VZW TP2 - No Warning When Battery Is Low?

OK - ran it down pretty fast today (fast enough that it has me a bit concerned!):

When it got low, there was a voice alert warning about the battery. It repeated again, but not for several minutes.

So I guess it is working, and I must have missed it the other times. I guess I was expecting the frequent, repeated tones that all my other phones used - loud and often enough in fact to be annoying, but definitely gets the point across. I kind of wish the TP2 did that, or at least gave me some other options for the alerts.

Thanks to all for the help here, and sorry about the false alarm...:???:

Re: VZW TP2 - No Warning When Battery Is Low?

Why be sorry? It may not be a known issue, but you're right. It would be nice to have the option to change it. My phone died while held to my ear in a conversation yesterday. Never heard any warning either.

Re: VZW TP2 - No Warning When Battery Is Low?

I'm pretty sure I've gotten the popups to remind me the phone is almost dead on mine, unless I'm remembering from my old TP. And I have the VZ TP2.

Re: VZW TP2 - No Warning When Battery Is Low?

Agreed - this could work better on the TP2. When that's combined with (in my opinion and experience so far, at least relative to my prior non-smart phones) borderline battery life, this does become a practical problem.

Not wanting to start another thread, while we're on the topic of battery life:
  1. What have you all found are the most effective ways of conserving battery power that don't seriously impact performance and useability?
  2. I'm considering getting a second battery which might come in handy at times: is there any way to charge it up outside the phone? Seems inefficient otherwise, as you'll always end up with 2 used up batteries that you'll have to charge sequentially in the phone.
  3. And if there isn't a good way to do this, how good is power retention in these batteries if I charge it in the phone, and then just remove it and keep it around for when it's needed? I know NiMH are pretty bad in this regard, and hope Lithiums do better!
Thanks as always - great forum!

Re: VZW TP2 - No Warning When Battery Is Low?

I bought two chargers from ebay to charge a battery externally.

I use one at home & one on my desk at work. I carry a spare fully charged battery with me as I use the hell out of my phone & certain apps like Pandora can really kill the battery........

You guys should be hearing more than a voice alert, you should be hearing the lowbatt.wav sound that's in \Windows\. Try playing than in media player and tell me if that sound is playing or not.

I find Lowbatt (11.4K) and LowBattery (229K), and both will plan in Media Player. They're not that loud or attention getting, and I don't recall ever hearing them in any context, and definitely didn't the other day after the Voice announcements started.

Something like that repeated every 30 or 60 seconds, loud and attention getting enough, would be helpful.

Do others' TP2's do this?

jmorton10: I'll have to check ebay and see about those chargers. If you happen to have a link to the one(s) you bought, let me know.

My battery ran low last night and the audible alerts worked fine. One caveat on my device is that my Voice Command is totally disabled.

Interesting - I do have Voice Command enabled on my phone, so that may be what I do get the Voice Alert, but not the other audible alerts.

I use my Bluetooth Headset while driving, and have been assuming I need Voice Command enabled in order to make calls using the headset, leaving the phone in my pocket. If that's not the case, let me know.

You can leave VC enabled but disable certain options within the VC settings. I *think* the one for system even notifications is called "Status". You can try unchecking this or select "Status" and then click the notifications button off to the right. From there you can choose to have it announce through the bluetooth AND the speaker.
