Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
Ok i have been trouble shooting this almost every waking moment for the past 7 days. I have had no results... i even got no results with linksys live chat techs. so i am turning to you guys in hopes that someone can shed some light on my situaion.
Basic info. Touch pro 2 Dektop running Vista Home Premium SP1 Lap top Running Vista Home Basic SP1 Linksys WRT54G v5 latest firmware updated The laptop Connects through WiFi to the router and it DHCP The Desktop is Connected to the router. I am trying to connect to my desktop from my TP2 Here is a picture of my settings as is right now. People keep telling me to try settings i have allready done and to check things i have told them i have checked like they dont believe me so i am including this picture so there is no second guessing. Obviously I have tried many variations but nothing has worked... IF anyone could look ant tell me whats right and whats wrong i would be very grateful. I really need to get this going and i have been at it non stop to no avail. I cant even get this to work by tring to use my laptop to connect and its on the same network. i tried my static IP i tried my external IP (double checked online) i even set up a DYNDNS and that didnt work. Someone please help. :( http://files1.guildlaunch.net/guild/...ttings3863.jpg |
Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
don't know if this is gonna help but i found this guide that said to port forward port 3389 on a static ip address. it wasn't working until i did that. oh and i left the domain blank
|
Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
I have no experience using RDP but know my way around a network.
The error is you are sending windows login credentials to your router's IP and not the computer. I'm not to sure how to solve this. Thinking about it...you may need to port forward. |
Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
Ya I agree leave domain blank, it is unnecessary.
Somewhere in advance setting on the router will be something on port forwarding. Assuming 3389 is the correct port, forward tcp/udb to the computer's ip you wish to log in to. Also I noticed an error. Your routers default gateway isn't the same as the default gateway of your computer. I use 192.168.100.1 for my default and allow 192.168.100.2-.9 for my computers or if a friend stops by. |

So my default gateway should be set as 192.168.100.1 ? or how would i find what my default gateway should be? ipconfig? |

I tried setting my default gatway to 192.168.100.1 and i get an errorhttp://files1.guildlaunch.net/guild/...config8371.jpg

Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
Well if your DMZ forwarding to your computer (192.168.1.5) it doesn't matter since your router(98.xxx.xxx.1) and computer(192.168.1.1) are on different gateways.
So change your router gateway to 192.168.1.1 and it should work. I should mention you shouldn't DMZ permanently. Once you get this thing working go to run, type cmd, type netstat and figure out which port the program is opwning and only forward that one. |
Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
no no go back
set router gateway to 192.168.1.1 on computer tcp/ip set your ip to 192.168.1.5 and your gateway 192.168.1.1 |
Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help

yeah i dont plan on leaving DMZ on i was just taking it down to bare bones to see where the problem lies. then work backwards turning on certain security features one by one to see wich one stops it from working then fixing it from there. let me try to change my router gateway and let you know what happens |

Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
Well you at some point set your gateway to your ip which is incorrect. It should be set to the typical network internal ip of 192.168.x.x

Sorry to interrupt this post, but as a courtesy to those reading through the posts...
Please ATTACH full-sized screenshots instead of inserting them. It makes the post MUCH easier to read when you don't have giant images forcing horizontal scroll bars. :) Also, for the router settings, don't mess with DMZ... just add TCP 3389 to the Applications & Gaming list and point the IP to your computer's internal 192... address. |

Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
Don't bother filling in the mask just make sure your computer's tcp/ip reflects whatever its default is(255.255.255.x).

trying to set my router default gateway somehow locked me out of the internet. im not sure how to change the default gateway on the router. btw... i really appreciate all the help. |
Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
I would reset your router by holding in the reset button on the back for 30mins so your at default. Default login is typically username= left blank and password= admin.
Under setup > basic setup drop down should be automatic dhcp ip 192.168.1.1 (this is your router gateway ip) subnet 255.255.255.0 under application & gaming > single port fwd external port 3389 internal port 3389 both to ip 192.168.1.5 check enabled make sure your saving. on your computer tcp/ip ip 192.168.1.5 subnet 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1 leave your dns |
Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
This is basic stuff. that above pic shows you in setup > advanced routing which is advanced and not what is needed.
This is the easiest way to get you up and running. |

Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
Well then set it under setup > basic setup
76.85.229.110 76.85.229.111 Apparently your isp doesn't use dhcp |
Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
Also i dont know if it matters, the basic setup page of the router says ip is 192.168.1.1, but the starting IP address is 192.168.1.[100] allowing me to change the last 3... and my static IP is set to .5 wich is less then 100.. is that ok or should i change my static to like 105 or something (the linksys tech told me 5-99 were my options)
|
Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
Ha ya your right its late for me. Set the 100 to 1 so your ip would be 192.168.1.1
You can change any of these numbers as long as they are consistent throughout your network and start with 192.168 |

Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
also... the subnet mask for the router is listed as 255.255.248.0 and the subnet mask for the local network is listed as 255.255.255.0 (same as my tcp/ip) should i have my tcp/ip set to the same as the router or the local network like it is now?

Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
I just checked my routers log... and i tried to connect my TP2 to the computer by entering the IP and nothing else and the log shows it as popping up... is there a way to figure out how far its going and where its getting rejected at?

Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
anyone else have any ideas...
in the midst of changing settings around i somehow screwed up my xbox connection and i have spent about 2 hours trying to get that to work and its not... its like my xbox doesnt exist anymore. and people are telling me to download crap to make it work.. why the heck would i need something to make it work if it worked fine 3 hours ago? lol Edit: system restore fixed this xbox working again. |
Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
ive just went to www.canyouseeme.org and tried to connect to my computer through port 3389 and it says connection timed out. but when i get on my routers log i can see the connection from my touch pro 2.... so its getting to the firewall but not getting past even though i have portforwarding set up. my firewall is still off.
so if my connection is getting to the router, and the router is set up to forward that connection to me desktop PC (assuming that its getting to my PC because technically it should be) my pc is set up to allow this to happen, so what else could be causing my computer to block this type of connection. |
Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
Ok. i am finally giving up... tomorrow i am going to call HP Support and get them to tell me how to do this... they have connected to my computer remotly before when i had other problems so maybe they can help me figure it out. and if not then microsoft has left that part of the OS out of my copy of windows vista or something. i have allready checked with my ISP i have contacted my router support and nothing has worked.
If HP cant help me then i am just going to pour gas on my computer and my TP2 and burn them... maybe i can get my nokia 3560 up and running on verizon LOL. something Im tired of pulling my hair out over this.. i actually felt like throwing my tower out the window earlier and it cost about 2 grand. this just plain sucks. and it boils down to bad programming. setting up one simple program shouldnt be this darn hard. it should be one click. [x] allow this computer to be controlled remotly: you will need this info to connect... yada yada... but its not microsoft has to be all technical about it. thanks to everyone that helped out, and if you have any other tips i could try please feel free to jot them down as i will probably not have any luck with tech support either... its just not been my week so far. |
Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
HP wanted to remote connect to my computer and set it up for me but they said it would cost me $60.00... wtf...
|
Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
OMG... i just found out that if you have Vista Home (premium or basic) you cannot use remote desktop connection from your TP2 to connect to your computer... unless you hack the batch file. In process of hacking it will return results.
8 days of freaking looking this up and trying to fix it only to just find this out.,.. this should have been one of the FIRST things that i came across. microsofs website didnt even mention it in the trouble shooting guide. |
Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
got it working somewhat... i remote connected to my computer from my lan..., now just to get my phone connecting im also getting a new error that i have not got before... it says connection ended on the network please try again

Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help

Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
This is just basic networking. Its not really in the correct forums.
You will need to make sure that you can connect with another computer first prior to trying to connect with your TP2. What you need to do is start all over on your router and your computer TCP/IP. Login to router and reset to default.(192.168.1.1- leave blank/admin) Computer reset your TCPIP properties to default(use DHCP) and save. Now we will set your computer to a static IP(outside the DHCP range)-knowing you have a linksys do the following. IP: 192.168.1.200 subnet: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1(router address) DNS: 192.168.1.1(router address) Save these settings. Lets double check this is correct. Open a command prompt. tpye: IPCONFIG /all When you press enter the above IP TCPIP info should match. Now we need to enable terminal server on your computer. S**t! I just wrote this whole thing and realized your computer OS doesn't support Termanal Server. XP Home and Vista Home versions do not have the feature to host a remote desktop connection!! You will need XP Pro, Vista Business or Ultimate. EDIT: I skimmed the thread, but missed what you wrote above-woops. I can finish the directions for you if you get a different OS-let me know. So, no matter what you do you will be out of luck. Try Logmein Free. You can also install Windows7 RC1 for free to try it out. |

Yeah i downloaded a "hack" as it were that gives vista home (premum or basic) the terminal service. i can connect from my laptop remotely now and everything is getting through my router ok. so if i can connect to my PC from my laptop then my static IP should be set up fine. (its not the same as what it was in the picture on the first page of this thread anymore.) now my DNS 1 and DNS 2 are still the same in my TCP/IP settings.. starting with 78 or whatever... its not listed as 192.168.1.1 but i AM able to connect remotly... just not with my TP2 and i thoughs that windows RC1 was closed back in july for beta. i tried like 2 months ago and it said that they were no longer offering the beta out and that i had missed my chance. P.S. i hate Log me in... log me in doesnt work with Opera and its a pain in the A$$ to log into it using IE on my phone.... i really want to get this RDP working so its simply 2 buttons away at all times.. not have to go through the hassles of logging in to a service that i dont care for.. this has become more of a mission for me then anything. by all rights it should work and its not... and that bugs the everloving crap out of me. |
Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
i read something about the program from HTC that siad in the Domain name you need to put the name of the Terminal Service Domain..

Re: Remote Desktop Connection Still not working.... need help
WOW. Is there anything wrong with the remote desktop on the TP2?
I now have Sprint Treo Pro and I have no trouble remote into my Windows 7, XP or Vista. |
