Confused about 3G and EVDO with my VZW TP2
 

I always thought 3G was used by other carriers, and EVDO was Verizons higher speed data connection. My TP2 has never stated that it uses EVDO, the icon on the notification area always says 1X or 3G.

Is the phone on a 3G network because it has a GSM radio, or is it actually using EVDO and the icon is just off?

3g is the third generation of mobile networking standards. There are many different types of 3g connections. EV-DO is a CDMA 3G standard that Verizon uses.

If i am not mistaken the only TP2 that supposed to have the EVDO icon is the sprint version, Verizon & ATT&T will have 3G icons and T-mobile would have EDGE icon they all 3G just different names.. if you really want to find out why they named different you can Google it i guess.. LOL

CDMA 3G = EvDO
GSM 3G = UMTS/HSPDA

Then you have different bands for different countries and such, but that is the basics.

It isn't that they call it different things, they are different technologies using different frequencies. CDMA uses EvDO format for their 3G technology. CDMA is Verizon, Altell, USCC, Sprint and some other MVNOs and smaller carriers. GSM is AT&T, Cingular, T-Mobile and possibly some other small carriers and some MVNOs.

At any rate a CDMA radio cannot use a GSM tower and vice versa. The GSM 3G is based on WCDMA, but is still a GSM only thing as far as I know.

Also EDGE is not 3G, is is a 2G technology. Some argue that it is really 2.5G, but whatever. EDGE is the fallback for UMTS. Just like 1xRTT is the rollback for EvDO.

Gotcha, so 3G is just a generic umbrella term for faster internet.

3rd Generation. It is applied to the EvDO and UMTS and its' further itterations. IE EvDO rev0, revA, revB and HSPDA such like that. The next tech will be 4G.
