Sprint TP2 RAM

Alright, so I know we have plenty of threads going around, but I havent seen the RAM topic covered.

I just need a simple answer and we'll see this thread drop and disappear soon enough. (i apologize is this has been discussed on another thread, but it's a jungle out there!)

Okay, so we know there's less RAM on the tp2. But how much do you actually start with after a soft reset and all of the default software is loaded? More precisely, i'd like to know with TF3D enabled/disabled. Also if there are any Mobile Shell3 users out there, how much free RAM is available to you (when running ms3 and no other UI). Please post exact amount and percentage.

This would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Re: Sprint TP2 RAM

On the 1st boot up with TF3D enabled it's sitting @ 51%

With TF3D disabled it's sitting @ 44%

Re: Sprint TP2 RAM

After booting up and everything gets settled its running around mid 50's and after using the phone for a few its around the low to mid 60's.

Re: Sprint TP2 RAM

With MS3 after soft reset:
OS Program Memory=104.67
Program Memory=183.33
Used=92.07
Free=91.26

Re: Sprint TP2 RAM

with these results i cant wait for the hspl so we can just delete tf3d completely and run 6.5. also we'll be able to change the pagepool and do as we please.

p-slim 09-06-2009 03:27 PM

Re: Sprint TP2 RAM

also the tp2 only has ram because of the way they set it up. it has less ram but more storage memory so basically the tp1 and tp2 have the same memory. as stated in my previous post once we have the hspl we can change that with custom roms.

i hear ya, some of these titanium only roms are only 80-90mb, have like 350 of usuable room left... i dont like TF3D at all.... not that ive ever looked, but youd think thered be a manilla remover or something... some kind of cab that would remove it out right, even from stock roms...

...honestly what would happen if u just went in a deleted all the manilla files??

Someone asked that earlier and i think they said its possible but would be extemely tedious and time consuming. A cab that someone would create is a great idea. But until the hspl comes out we're still running 6.1 on this thing i have to keep tf3d active because i don't use spb mobile shell or anything like that.

Re: Sprint TP2 RAM

i ran 6.1 stock till about 3 weeks ago and ive had TPs since just after the begining i think. without TF3D... i just use today with a launch pugin, and system plugin, and second today for weatherpanel... im gonna do the same on my TP2 on tuesday too, until we can flash...

just wondered if those were linked to anythign other than TF... even if it takes 10minutes to delete, its worth it for te extra room really....especially if you dont use it..

at the same time i install alot of stuff, i usually still always have around 100mbs left over afterwards, so its not like i need the room.. i just like when i installed dom sims and silences rom, first cab i put in i had like 330+mbs to start with instead of the 200+ u start with on stock

Re: Sprint TP2 RAM

I just checked and it looks like the TF3D manila files take up ~36 Mb of total ROM space.

boredandtattooed 09-06-2009 04:56 PM

Re: Sprint TP2 RAM

yeah maybe if your on vzw TP1 youd need it, but thats not much space really.. i thoughtd be more like 50mb atleast...

Re: Sprint TP2 RAM

thanks guys! kinda sucks that we lose RAM. but if it runs great then i guess it doesn't really matter unless you're extremely crazy about multitasking. Guess it's something we're willing to overlook for the best thing out on Sprint. I'll be getting mine soon.

Anyone notice a dip in performance after opening/closing apps all day?

Re: Sprint TP2 RAM

I personally haven't. Apps pretty much respond instantaneous all day with no signs of system slow down

I have had several apps open to the point where the memory use was at 90% and it was running as smooth as if I just used it for the first time. I know alot of people have been saying its not that much of an upgrade but htc have improved on so many little things that it really feels like a night and day difference from the tp1.

I'm not worried about it, if I upgrade. I have have quite a few apps open on the Mogul, so this has to be a huge improvement

Re: Sprint TP2 RAM

I always set my X button to close programs rather than hide them, so I've never run into an issue with memory. Sure, on rare occasions I'll have more than one program open to do something, but I've never had a crash or out of memory error. Then again, I also subscribe to principle of a soft-reset in the morning when I take it off the charger too. Only rarely have I ever had it lock up on me.

We are talking about whats available after boot up. With the tp1 on a fresh reset you would be getting around 40% of ram being used with the tp2 on a fresh reset you will be getting around 54% of ram being used. With my tp1 after using the phone for a while it hovers around 50% ram being used with my tp2, after being used for a while, ram hovers around 68%.

Ahh ok that should be stated is available memory drop. expect that its got tf3d v2 not v1 v2 takes up more memory

I don't think that the version of touchflo would make that much difference in available ram, there has to be some other reason like a rediculously high page pool or something. In any case it doesn't bother me at all since the phone runs so smooth, no matter what I am doing. Hell, even the video capture capabilities of the phone has been greatly improved, it doesn't look like a slide show any more.

The memory in the tp2 is distributed differently then from the tp1. There is more storage memory but less ram.

Re: Sprint TP2 RAM

IM just wondering if all this discussion is really worth it.. the TP2 is so much faster then the Mougal, and has like 4x the ram.. so if its @ 70%or 90% does it really matter?

My PC runs just as fast @ 90% load as it does@ 70 % load (90 % of 256 is still leaving 25mb for operating, which is 2x what my Mougal WM6.5 runs @ every day).)

The TP1 was full of issues as i hear..and Im guessing it has OS/ hardware issues (not including lack of RAM issues) so the TP2 should be the BOMB..

BTW even the Iphone slows down after a few days (memory leak?) and has to be rebooted for peak performance..
Thanks MattSM for all your help!!

Of course this discussion is worth it, this isn't about a mogul vs tp2 this is about a tp1 and tp2. Many people are saying that this phone isn't worth much of an upgrade from a tp1 since spec wise its the same as the tp1 for the most part. But even though it has the same specs it performs alot better in every imaginable way compared to the tp1 running the same exact OS.

i was once on the fence about upgrading to the tp2 from my old tp1...... but oh my god was I a retard for thinking that. this thing never slows down like the tp1 did, you dont need a custom rom on it for it to run decent, the camera is better IMO even without the flash, Dudes and Dudetts, the speakers on this thing is crazy, with my wifes diamond next to it you cant hear nothing on the diamond and the diamond was louder than my pro1.... you dont have to worry about having a charger or extended battery around, i used to have to take one with me to work with my tp1 and i dont have to with the tp2... this dont get extremely hott to where you could just feel the damn thing eating away at the ribbon on the keyboard like the tp1....

trying to type on my wifes diamonds onscreen keyboard is crap, with the tp1 it was the same.... now i can easily type on screen and actually get some speed....

the tilt is a cool feature but i think it coul have used a little more planning as theres a slight wobble on all of em but still sturdy on the catching point, but down its sturdy as a board and shut theres 0 gap or play when ya touch the screen in portrait...

they keyboard just smashes the tp1s, i thaught it wouldnt be a upgrade but boy was i wrong...

the no dpad takes some getting used to and the no center button also, but on the other side i havent used my sylus once and i used to be a big sylus user.. but imagine how big this would be with a dpad...lol

the volume button is nicely placed where you can access it without having to mash your fingers in the upper left corner to turn the volume up or down...

atleast on the tmobile version the sd card slot is on the outside with a great cover that matches the housing nicely, also for us tmobile versioners the soft reset is on the outside as well like the tp1...

program memory is a little higher than the tp1 yes, but if the device dont slow down, the battery rocks, and hasnt run outta memory yet, who gives a left testicle about it? like i said, if it dont effect nothing, why complain?

so take it from a guy who was one like no way, thats no upgrade, but once i saw one in stores, i was like im a moron, oh and the sensitivity is crazy and 0 hack could get close to this....

its a 10000 % better, just the tiny things ya notice make it so much more enjoyable....... battery life rocks and the screen is huge and way more vibrant than the tp1.... good day.... ill be playing with my tp2.... 1.5 weeks since i got it and i still am in awwww.

I probably will seem like a noob for asking this aince im at work and if already discussed then ignore but I remember there was a hotfix for the readout of the device memory on the unlocked version to read RAM as 288 instead of 256 which is what it read at first.

did sprint and other carriers really lower the ram or will these models also need the hotfix and will it be upgraded by the carrier?

see www.htc.com for info on hotfix (located in the austrialian section right now)

Not sure if they fixed it, since I don't have one yet. But I'm not sure why you would need to fix it, since remaining unused memory will still be correctly shown, I believe. The 32 missing megs is 32 that is always in use anyway, so there is no big deal on this issue, from what I can see, that would need to be "fixed". I think it's like when old 286 computers started having more than 640k, but just "shadowed" Rom into the extra for faster access. That RAM above 640k was available to the user on those old PC's, and the "extra" 32 megs wasn't available to the user on the TP1 either, as it was dedicated to video, and still is, just the totals are displayed differently.
