As horndoctor stated, you may have a hardware issue.

The slide out function, as with many slide phones, consists of a flex/ribbon cable connecting the digitizer/lcd to the main board. This flex/ribbon may be loose and thus hinders your touch functionality when slid out.

Got insurance? Take it in and advise of what's happening. They may just want to replace it.

You can try to seat the flex/ribbon yourself, but would need a Torx6 screw driver. Undo the 4 screws under the battery cover. The speaker comes off first (at the top), jimmy the remainder of the case, bottom of the keyboard side first. You'll see the board, looking down on the phone, lift from the right hand side. Now you'll see the flex/ribbon, just make sure that it's seated well. Good luck.
