location app that's closer than google maps?

google maps little blue dot is always 500-900 meters away from where I am. Is there a free or minimal cost map-app that is more accurate?

Thanks!

it is using whatever location sensor is inherent within the tp2.

I do not have an external gps.
I do not have quickgps - I just d/l and install a "HTC quickgps with patch" but it gives me a certificate error when I try to start it. is there a better cab?

Stock 6.5 rom. trying another quickgps

in the setting you can choose "use gps" and it will use the the phones gps

google "sdkcerts2015" and install that for the cert error

Thanks given!

The settings in googlemaps did it!

What does quickgps add to it? (I'm off to fix the cert error - I think I can only thank you once, unfortunately!

quickgps downloads the lastest sat. info for a quicker more accurate gps lock

Got a 5kb sdkcertsnew2015.cab but it doesn't fix the problem. Will go try to reinstall guickgps. again.

Re: location app that's closer than google maps?

ya uninstall quickgps, then install sdkcerts, soft reset, install quickgps

nope.

"the file quickgps cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificte, ore one of its components cannot be found. if the problem exists, try reinstalling or restoring this file."

uninstalled quickgps (which causes a restart)
installed sdkcerts (again)
soft reset
installed quickgps (which causes a restart)

but no joy.

might well be.

without it, (when I'm over by the window), it finds 6 or 8 sats within about 5 seconds. (Boston). It gives me a location that is about 100meters away.

yep - took it outside a few feet away from the building and I would say within 5 meters easily.

If you have the stock rom you should already have quickgps.
You could try bing. I like it better anyway because it has spoken directions.

Bing

I don't believe that Bing uses the built-in GPS, does it? (I fired it up and it gives me a map that I can't zoom in or out on, or move about. and I see no place for gps.)

If you download and install the bing app when you start it up it should find your location. If not click on Maps or Directions and have it find your location. It definitely uses the gps chip.

i was going to say the same. quickgps comes preinstalled on 6.5 and i think bing is way better than google maps. i dont know exactly how accurate it is, but i can say its damn accurate!

Re: location app that's closer than google maps?

Okay.

Thanks to both of you for the info of the inclusion of quickgps in 6.5 stock. Thanks given.

Installed Bing app and it did locate me, but only when I stick it out the window, and, again, about 20meter accuracy but that's because of the building.

If I'm inside, I'd have to use google maps as it will locate me without gps sight.

+1 for bing. bing so far gave me exact location. google maps usually tells me that i am with 2100m of some place

I think gmaps will use both cell tower and gps if the gps signal is low and Bing relies soly on gps signal. That would explain the two connecting differently. +1 to bing being better than gmaps for gps

Bing is much better.
Plus you can also get a quick summary when you ask for directions.
You can also speak the location you are looking for and get directions to it right from the same app.
p.

LOL - I asked it for directions and it gave me choices a few towns over - guess it didn't figure I just wanted to go a couple of blocks... I went out and played for a bit on buses and trolleys and it did fine. Wish I had had it yesterday! New toy!!! And yes, I begrudgingly think Bing is better. :)
