Is my TP2 the only one turned to crap??

Long story short, got a TP2, had fun doing my customizations, then later upgraded to 6.5. Ran okay for a while; noticed the RAM leakage but it was manageable. Now I can't seem to go a day without soft resetting at least twice. I can let the phone sit with nothing running, yet when I pick it up:

a.) I can't turn the screen on (the phone itself isn't frozen b/c the power light is functioning)...remove cover, soft reset
b.) it's EXTREMELY slow to the point of appearing frozen (slider will take forever to actually slide)...remove cover, soft reset
c.) flip clock is frozen (yet the taskbar will have the correct time) and I can't operate it...remove cover, soft reset
d.) the background is on Windows and is loading the HTC platform (???)
e.) screen won't load properly (taskbar, page title is suddenly missing)...soft reset

I run cleanRAM on the highest setting, but freeing up the memory doesn't seem to be enough. It's gotten to the point that I actually hate this phone because I never know if it'll work right when I'm trying to make/answer a call or send a text. I already plan to go back to 6.1, but that had its issues as well.

CASE IN POINT: While writing this post I turned on the screen and checked a text message. Screen goes blank after timing itself out...nothing unusual there. Pick up the phone again and try to turn on the screen....NOTHING! Pull out the keyboard, press a hard key, no response. ](*,)

I'm officially done with Windows Mobile. Screw version 7.

Just out of curiosity, which version of the phone do you have?
I had the Sprint version and hated the stock 6.5 which is full of issues.
One Task29 and a Flash of the LEAD rom, and outside of the phones technical limits, it was smooth sailing on the software end.

Yeah, 6.5 stock with cab customizations...don't know how to flash and already sold my 2nd phone so no back-up in case I crash this one.

And yeah, I'm totally digging the Epic...Android with a keyboard, my dream finally come true. Now I just need $249....volunteers? :-D

Is your phone flashing unlocked?

Yeah, but that's with a new service plan.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. A hard reset cleared up the problems. Backup your contacts, etc.

It's surprisingly easy thanks to the hard work of the coders and developers supporting the device.

If you decide to take the plunge, my suggestion is the LEAD rom. It looks like Sprint stock 6.5, but performs much better and has all the Sprint settings configured.

Good luck!

No problems for me on the Stock Sprint WinMo 6.5 version.
I did have the sleepy phone syndrome when I first updated to 6.5.
Then I got a replacement. No issues since.

Re: Is my TP2 the only one turned to crap??

The problems aren't just limited to Sprint. My Verizon version worked well for about a year, even with unlocking, and a multitude of ROM upgrades... then all of a sudden the phone started into an endless reset loop, as if the end button was constantly being pressed. Somehow managed to flash back to Stock ROM took it in, and got a refurbished unit. This one kept on shutting down randomly when I would close the keboard. Took it in again, and they wanted to send me another refurbished piece of crap. I opted just to upgrade to Droid Incredible, and my TP2 is now sitting in a drawer gathering dust. Loving Android but I don't know if I'll abandon Windows Phone just yet, will wait to see what the upcoming WP7 units have to offer.

I'm just gonna say you guys wouldn't have these problems if you used a 6.1 rom. Go ahead and flame me but I really believe your issues are 6.5 related. ;)

No.don't flame him..its exactly what horndoctor wants!!!!...lol jk

For me I used wm6.5 and it was fairly stable with no issues...until I got my epic..then out of no where the homescreen on my TP2 kinda started to lag once I got my Epic and paid more attention to it (jealousy?)..but overall I'd say yeah 6.1 is smoother.

Re: Is my TP2 the only one turned to crap??

sounds like typical stock 6.5 issues. im on the 6.1 stock with the GT2L cab (dont know what its like without) and ive only had 2 lockups across 2.5 weeks. so no issues at all my only one is that i cant find a sense 2.1 cab or a working 2.5 cab.

I forgot to mention, that was 7 months without any problems or a hard reset so it was way overdue for one.

Re: Is my TP2 the only one turned to crap??

ditch sense. imo, that's the problem. been running 6.5 since april + mobile shell. it's just a lot better; no cookie or maxsense can compare the the features and stability.

I've had maybe 3-4 lockups after MONTHS of running, along with 3 email accounts, and decent amount of text and calls. The only time I get lockups is when I play with overclock tool. The speed wasnt worth the lockups. My job is too valuable for a mediocre phone.

I'm pretty sure sense and archsoft overlay is the problem. I use windows messaging only.

Re: Is my TP2 the only one turned to crap??

no, in my family we have 4 tp2 and have gone through 3 different replacements for various issues.

the hard key buttons on the keyboard stopped working on a few letters. got a replacement, but its having similar issues again.

another one had the end button hard key stop working. all the other three buttons worked normally. and because of this, for some reason it caused the battery to drain from 100% down to 10% in less than 2 hours when the phone was on standby with no use.

the last one seems to be a common issue now where after about a year, the phone decides to constantly soft reset itself in an endless loop.

btw, i'll spare you the details, but in the process of having these issues with the 3 tp2's... i went through i believe more than 12 refurbished phones in total and countless wasted hours since quality control was absent on the phones sent to me... and thats how i have all the extra tp2 batteries and back case covers

eric12341 10-30-2010 03:52 PM

Re: Is my TP2 the only one turned to crap??

shit ill take some of those extra batteries off you. my battery has gone to crap within the last few months, it doesnt last for anymore than 2 and a half hours with heavy use when before i would get a lil bit over 4 hours and now its doing what my TP battery used to do which was to overheat on the charger and discharge.

I had this same issue with Sprint's 6.5 release. Really I have it with any Rom/OS unless I tidy up my texts. I suggest PPCPIMBackup of everything then playing around with what you recover after a factory reset. Especially not including the text messages.

Task29 and a fresh install of the stock Rom is always a good idea if all else fails. Good luck.

Re: Is my TP2 the only one turned to crap??

Well, I am glad to know it's not just me. Not that I want EVERYONE to suffer...just good to know I didn't do something to cause this mess with my TP2.

I'll maybe consider flashing....have done numerous hard resets so I know that alone won't be enough. Think I'll just save up for the Epic. Upgrade is in January so 2 months to save some change!

Thanks all!

Re: Is my TP2 the only one turned to crap??

Any hardware issues aside, I find a good re-flash always gives you that spring time fresh feeling!
I Task29 the booger, and flash Sprint Lovers 6.5 (Thanks Chris!). I have everything backed up with Sprite, and use PPCPIMBackup for the contacts.
I DON'T use PPCPIMBackup for speed dials, as that can break your dialer.
All my customizations are in the Sprite restore file, so it's completely the same every time.
I've had a Rhodium_W since late Sept. '09, and it's still a champ. Thanks to custom Roms, overclocking & Co0kie's Home Tabs.
I do this procedure about once a month, and it takes all of a half of an hour.
YMMV

That is what I do. These devices need to be reset every so often.

Re: Is my TP2 the only one turned to crap??

+1 for a re-flash, even the stock ROM.

My current TP2 is a refurb after the "oil slick" on the original device. When this phone arrived it had issues with certain keyboard keys not functioning properly and random "lock-ups". As my warranty was about to run out, I requested and received another refurb. Before dumping the first refurb, I tried a re-flash of the stock 6.5 ROM. Everything just started working! My assumption is the refurb process involved a faulty flash.

I sent the second refurb back unopened so someone else could have it.

To eliminate lock-ups and greatly increase your battery life (not to mention making the device function more "snappily"), I strongly suggest over-clocking. I never lock-up and the battery lasts almost three days! At 806Mhz, it's almost Snapdragon fast! OK, that's a bit of hyperbole, but it really is a great improvement.

To eliminate the RAM leak, I suggest turning off Sense. As previously suggested any UI (even Titanium or the "stock" Today screen) will improve over-all performance.
