Help a newbie?

I just got my touch pro 2 for sprint. I have never flashed a rom.

I need the following minimum features:
1) Use the phone internationally and on local US gsm networks
2) I want some Turn by Turn (text to speech) navigation software that is free installed
3) I like the stock sprint rom (upgraded to windows mobile 6.5), I'd like to stay in windows mobie 6.5

There are so many things out there. I am confused where to start.

Can someone help a newbie?

tp2 upgrades forum for sim unlocking/hspl unlocking. good Turn by Turn (text to speech) navigation software isnt gonna be free that i know of. i would suggest you unlock/flash to a custom 6.5 rom cause you will see lots of gains across the board. vins roms are very stable/fast once you get unlocked.

oops, wrong forum also, tp2 forum for this thread.

Does this mean unlocking and flashing are the same step? or 2 separate steps?

See i saw that link, it isnt clear if I need to do HSPL unlock first and then move to the sim unlock or do i just do a sim unlock?

you need to unlock phone first then you can flash a custom rom. you may need to do some reading before you go all crazy but its not had to unlock or flash after your unlocked. sim unlocking is also what yu wanna do, separate thread on that also in upgrades forum and a sticky.

Re: Help a newbie?

Use the HSPL unlocker to unlock your phone from here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/cdma-tp2-u...w-hardspl.html

For the SIM unlocker, go here:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/cdma-tp2-u...-unlocker.html

After you unlock your phone (HSPL unlocker) go to here to find a suitable custom rom that you would like to use.

Read the first couple of posts of both the unlocking threads above. If you have any questions, search within those threads for an answer first. If you can't find one after that or no one else had the same problem/issue/question as you, post in the thread and wait for a reply.

Re: Help a newbie?

Thanks for the replies. So what is the difference between a radio and a rom? Are they the same thing?

The notes say that I have to install the patched radio after sim is unlocked, so after this, am I tied to down to the ROM?

What is the order of things?

Thanks
Uday

Re: Help a newbie?

gsm or cdma - radio
windows mobile 6.1 or 6.5 or any customized OS - rom

you are never tied down to the ROM. you can change ROMs every hour if you want. of course...considering that you've HSPL unlocked your phone.

There are different versions of radios for different carriers and some switch them to see if they can get better results. Also, there are Worldphone Unlocked radios that some flash after SIM Unlocking for US GSM networks.

Thanks for all the responses. This is amazing stuff. I was able to get everything done. Energy rom installed, the interface is very slick!!!

I still have one problem though, wmwifirouter keeps disconnecting every 2 secs. Anyone have this issue? I tried posting on the energy rom thread, No takers there.

Thanks
Uday

Welcome to the thread. First things first, flashing new ROMs (and Radio's) is very addictive. If you start getting the bug you will need help and lots of it to start your own ROM making (when you really want to make things your own way), all that said please make sure to hit the "Thanks" button at the bottom of any post that you think helped you or any time you download something. It may seem simple but as time passes you will see how consuming this is and how much time gets spent in the "details". Don't get offended if people get snippy now and again, wisdom comes with its quirks LOL

Energy ROMs are very good and fast and always have new things to tinker with, so good choice! I guess you realized that you have to HSPL unlock to get started. Try on a few ROMs to see all the different types we have excellent chefs around here!! Sprint Nav is a good turn by turn nav program that works well. I have used it Intl and domestic. Just remember nav data is not part of Sprints free roaming when Intl. Make sure you have it in your program. http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/attachment...sprint-nav.cab

Good luck and have fun flashing!!

Re: Help a newbie?

sorry but youve been here since DEC 2007 and dont know what FLASH and UNLOCK means?? just have to giggle on this one.. your going in a VIP ROOM Thread now lol..

i used to use WMWifiRouter religously back in the day, only time i had an issue with shutting down, was if i put the reg key in wrong on the app(yes i paid $30 for mine lol).. when you put the key in wrong it will load up like normal, then disconnect after about 5seconds or so

Re: Help a newbie?

Hi.
Thanks for the additional comments. I have been hitting thanks liberally, if I see a green button on the post I read that i like, i hit it. :)

Figured out the wmwifirouter, there was an additional cab "wifi on on standby" that i was missing, not sure why this isnt included in every rom. But maybe thats my first step towards being a chef?

I have been here a while and used htc touch pro. I recently upgraded to the TP2 and hence I started flashing. Still no excuse to not to flas on the TP1.

Now I am on my way... Again.. amazing work. Reminds me of ddwrt.
Uday
