HTC TP 2 Won't charge unless turned off or on tether
 

Miss-posted this to the TP forum instead of TP2.


I've been searching exhaustively and I can only find brief glimpses as to what the problem might be. Been using TP2 for a year and used multiple ROM's. When upgrading to a MightyROM release about 5 months ago I noticed that I could no longer charge without turning off my phone or tethering it to my PC.

When I plug it into my car charger or general charge I get the "choose connection type" (which confusing as that I only want power :wink: and that's it.

No matter how many time I plug or unplug the usb cable that's all I get. If I power the phone off, it will charge.

I've tried multiple USB cables, chargers, etc.

I've also read the posts about Battery being hot... my battery isn't hot, to the touch nor via the temp readings (haven't re-installed the utility so I don't remember exactly what it was.

I'm currently running the 18.Sep.2010 release of Energy.

Radio is 2.35
HW version is 0004

Frankly not sure what else you would need to know:help:

I've tried various builds of MightyROM, MaxSense, Velocity, Maverick, all recent builds to the same thing (and before you say it, no, I have not gone and re-installed some old builds.... do I have to?... I really don't want to)

Thoughts? Advice? Suggestions?

there is a setting to disable charging when connected to usb, make sure that didn't get checked.

that is a good idea. that also started happening to one of my phones where the port went bad, so it might be your hardware. also, this thread will probably be moved b/c it is posted in the wrong spot.

I just had the same issue and sprint sent me a new tp2 because it would read any connection as a usb connection and wouldn't charge the phone unless it was powered off

Flash the verizon shipped ROM for your phone. If the issue still occurs, it's your phone's hardware and not the ROM. If it does not occur, it's the ROM (doubtful since you've tried several custom ones).

That won't fix it i tried all of that before I took my phone back to sprint just take to you cell company

my port just went out, I had 12 days left on my warranty. mine would charge but not move data(sync). sprint tested it and changed it out for a new phone for me. starting to sound more and more common for the usb ports to go out on tp2

I just went through the same thing.
Connecting to my car charger would bring up sync message.
First use only the OEM charger. The TP2 has a non-standard USB port.
The OEM USB cord can be used with a cig lighter to USB female
type charger. Just plug the OEM cord into the USB port on your charger.
The second thing I did, just to make sure, was to get a new battery.
It cost me about $6.00 on e-Bay and I haven;t had a problem since.

Ok, tried the stock ROM, no luck. One interesting thing I remembered. I had lost my stock USB cable at one time. It didn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out that any old USB cable would fit in the TP2 USB slot.

I'm wondering if using a standard USB cable could have shorted some sensor (yes, I know that's far fetched) but hey, I've seen crazier things.

I really don't want to go through the process of trying to get an RMA (I've had this phone for almost 14 months). Anyone else have a similar problem?
