19G data this month already. should I be worried.

With SERO unlimited data I figured I could tether my TP2 to my home network through a DD-WRT router, since I am the only one using the internet at home.

I just checked this month data usage, it is already over 19.3GB with 19 days left in the billing cycle. I am truly shocked by the number. between my computer and iPad, I surf net, check email, etc. for 2-3 hours each day. occasionally watch a few youtube videos (10-30 minutes on average). Never download large movie files etc. the largest file I downloaded for last month was a TP2 rom. How come the number stacks up so fast?

Now I am worried Sprint might argue that I have used too much data, questioning if I am tethering, and send me a large bill.

Am I paranoid? How do I defend my self IF Sprint does something?

you have the unlimited data plan right? if they argue that number being to high ask them what there definition of unlimited data is!!!!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en-us; MSM Build/MASTER) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

Sprint will say 5GB or less is unlimited, however I have yet to hear of anybody charged extra for high data usage.

Unlimited is unlimited.
I constantly use mass ammounts of data and have yet to be charged anything more than my bill.

yeah no worries, i use 30GBs a month... how you achieved you 19GBs in 15 days with little usage I dont know.. I get 30gb in a months but i donload files that are 1.5GBs all the time and my tethering connection is my Home internet connection thats always on if im home

yankees45us 08-20-2010 12:19 PM

Sprint has a 5gb cap on aircards only. But my thing is, you people that are tethering your phones and using that much data are basically screwing it up for everyone else. No wonder att changed their data plans and verizon is getting ready to do the same thing. Stop being so cheap and just get dsl or cable at home and leave the tethering for travel or at least stay under 10gb. Sprint doesn't have a cap on phone data but with people taking advantage it won't be long till they do the same thing as att.

haha good try man, but not going to work...

how are we screwing it up?? its Still unlimited and still the same place its always been..

If anything, Blasting the instructions how to do it and openly discussing the fact we do it for free would be what screws it up..

But ive been tethering for 3 years now, and sprint has changed anything about it, so obviously Sprint doesnt think wer ruining anything for anyone

thats because dan heese is a free loving, everybody take what you want, we dont enforce rules, smelly hippy. i know hes turning shit around at sprint, but i feel its too little too late, and there is going to be a shake up pretty soon. another ceo isnt going to let this stuff fly.
btw, this should be in carrier discussion!

AGreed! wait till we goto "bucket data" in a year or two.. unlimited voice minutes, txting, etc will all be included and we'll pay based on our data usuage only.. thats when things will get really interesting and/or really expensive

Yeah... Stop texting so much too... Don't be cheap. Go talk to your friends in person... If you take advantage of the unlimited texting it's gonna mess things up.
And don't eat so much at the all you can eat restaurants either.

That's what I call logic.

If you are worried about the prices ATT and Verizon are charging... Don't go to ATT or Verizon. Just stay with Sprint.
When you pay for UNLIMITED minutes... You can make 43,200 worth of calls per month (approximately 30 days). That's your limit unless you can bend time and space.
When you have unlimited data... Your only limit is your bandwith and how much data you are able to stream/download in those 43,000 minutes. So technically there is a cap. lol I'll let someone else do the math.

I don't think the "unlimited" will end any time soon for Sprint seeing that they just started unlimited for virgin mobile for only $25/mo. Now only if Virgin Mobile had some 1ghz Android phones [-o<

The people that abuse unlimited plans by tethering slow down the network for everyone. That said, as long as these companies keep selling their phones based on advertising all the great things they can do without putting much effort into boosting their networks to support them, I say screw the companies. AT$T touts their iPhones and focuses on bandwidth-hogging apps in their ads and then complains when we users buy the damn things and use them as advertised. Screw 'em!

I agree with most of your statement except the first part and in particular the word ABUSE. It could be considered an oxymoron to "abuse unlimited" As there is no limit therefore no opportunity for abuse.
But yeah... Screw 'em.

Since tethering is not covered by unlimited plans and one has to use some trickery to do it, it constitutes abuse by the consumer. Not that I feel any sympathy for the providers since their marketing depts. are causing the problems.

mmmm i think if anyone gets busted... honestly... we can all point to the supreme courts ruling on jailbreaking... lol

so the phone has the functionality built into it.... but carriers have locked that feature up via software.... technically, none of us have done anything more than bypass the carriers attempts to limit the functionality of the hardware for monetary gain.... as with the apple issue, they modified a small amount of code to allow the installation of 3rd party apps... we simply modified small amounts of code to unlock functionality from the phones manufacturer :occasion5:
just my take on it... sure, they can always say that we violated the contract with sprint and terminate service... but how can you prove i was tethering and not just lame as hell and sittin and watching youtube videos 24 hours a day with my phone? or chatting 12 hours a day with my phone...

What "trickery" do you have to use?? I just use Wifi Router mostly anymore.. ONLY ICS, uses stealth tethering.. so any of us that dont use ICS for tethering-arent actually trying to hide anything anymore...

Well last month on my "Unlimited" Data Plan, I ended up using just a hair over 82gigs.

They never questioned me about it, and if they did, I would simply explain that I was under the impressoin that my UNLIMITED data plan is UNLIMITED.

If I wanted a 5gig data limit, I would get a 5gig plan, not unlimited.

Don't know about other carriers, but on AT$T you're supposed to have a different plan for tethering or use an Aircard. I haven't done it, but from what I've read, those that tether are doing so in a way that either hides it from the network or uses some kind of relay setup to do so. My contract expressly forbids me from tethering as do most standard wireless contracts. I don't want to do anything to violate my contract because I still have a $15 unlimited data plan.

Howd you do that?? I use 30GBs without Fail every month.. I ONLY use tethering for my home connection, I have no real internet service provider but my phone.. so needless to say, I use it a TON!..

I run XBOX Live daily to stream several Netflix movies, I use BitComet daily,i constantly download files from the web(cabs, roms, pics, videos, comp progs, etc) i surf a ton(i know this one doesnt use alot of MBs), yet I cant really get over the Hump of 30GBs

so youve never downloaded or installed anything that wasnt from ATT itself or MS MArketplace??
flashed a ROM?
changed arcsoft versions?
installed a theme found here @ ppcg?
used GV, Skype??(both not true VoIP, but considered VoIP by our carriers and thats a no no)
Edited your registry?
Changed a bootscreen?
Changed a program Icon or any of the sense icons?(slider, weather, etc)
Changed your taskbar??

-if you havent done any of things, Im suprised you dont HATE your phone lol-

those are all examples of things that "technically" void your warranty.. Heck, most carriers tell you if it doesnt comes from their website/carrier store or MS market - then its a 3rd party app and thats not allowed and a violation of terms... Hence, having to re-flash and -relock devices before taking them in for service...

Odds are youve done a million things that "technically" void your warranty..

For tethering, I tried to fight that fight - about it being theft... even up till recently ive maintained that it was theft-yes, even though I was doing it myself lmao.. but hey, now, Im not doing ANYthing to hide my usage, so I dont really feel bad that My Carrier, Sprint, doesnt do anything about it..

Actually when I tether my speeds are more than double my road runner lite. I would cancel my internet altogether but then I'd lose my cable also and I've got a good price as it is (internet + basic cable = $30/mo).

Re: 19G data this month already. should I be worried.

For the person asking for how many minutes there are in a month (we'll assume 30 days is a month), here's the math.

30 days * 24 hours/day * 60 minutes/hour = 43200 minutes or 2592000 seconds

So your initial amount was right.

As for TC, is your WiFi connection secured? If it isn't (and by secured I mean with WPA or higher), then it might be possible that your neighbor is using your connection for their own (nefarious) deeds.

Two different animals. What you're talking about is the warranty on the phone. Of course I've modded it. I'm talking about my cell service contract. If I change anything on my contract or upgrade to a new phone through AT$T they can cancel my unlimited deal because they no longer offer it. Technically they could do that just because I am now using a smartphone, but since I had my plan in place before October 2009 when they started forcing all smartphone users into the $30 plan, they can't.

Actually "grandfather-ed" plans last till you change your plan or buy a device that forces you to change.. you have a legally binding "contract" with your cheaper than usual unlimited web... I understand though you not wanting to even give them a reason to queston anything.. up until a few months ago I still had a sprint plan that included 4 free music downloads a month..-a plan not offered in 2 years.. only reason I changed was i wasnt using the downloads anymore and I didnt need all the minutes so I figured why not lower my plan... I get free unlimited data on my lines-1500 everything messaging shared plan-as an add on.. Dont see me worrying that my 30GBs a months will make them take that away.. they cant-Im under contract with those terms.. Unless Im buying a new phone at a discounted price, thus extending my contract-could they try to make me pay for internet again..

Yup it was 82gig, not 8.2gig. I just moved into a new house and can't afford cable yet, so I have been downloading movies and tv shows like mad.

I generally use my tether for just browsing, but as of late been downloading shit like crazy. Including updates for my PC and some PC games as well.

If you want I can get a picture of it, just seems silly to me (as internet usage seems like a really goofy thing to brag about, lol).

I dont really need a pic lol.. was just making sure you knew the difference.. How do you find the time honestly to download all that stuff.. I can only have about 3 or 4 things in BitComet at once without it toally killing my speeds and taking all day just for those things.. I dont alot of "set it and forget its" before i leave or goto sleep, things like that... Our tethering speeds arent that great, about 2mb/down regularly +/- ...

The 5GB cap is for Aircards or PAM connections. Plus if you are grandfathered into one of the older conn card plans there is no cap. Only since last July I think (2009) did they add the 5GB to 3g conn card plans.
If you are using stealth tehering then it looks like you are using the data from the phone which is fine, but anyone actually looking will notice something funny. lol
