CDMA vs GSM TP2: What is really different between the two?

I have tried to find the answer to this but haven't been able to.

I have a Sprint TP2 (unlocked of course), and am thinking of moving to T-Mobile. I suspect I would have to do a radio upgrade, although this is still new to me. The real question is this: Will I be able to use the fast 3G data T-Mobile provides if I do this? Or will I be restricted to EDGE speeds?

I know there is a different section on this forum for GSM and CDMA versions of the phone, but still can't figure out exactly why -- are the phones totally different in terms of hardware, or can the Sprint (CDMA) version be made to function just like a GSM version with proper hacking?

Thanks a lot!

You dont need to upgrade radio. But you sure wont get 3G as T-Mobile band is different.

Trust, it sucks to have these phones, and not have 3G in them!!

For 3G, Tmobile uses WCDMA 1700
while many in the world use WCDMA 2100, that's what CDMA TP2 uses.

correct, but only since its the sprint version. i dont think you have to flash a new radio if your using the verizon version. and to the op, you will not get 3g speeds. if your thinking of moving to t mobile, why not just sign a contract and get an hd2 for 99 dollars????? you can easily sell your tp2 for more than that!

same here. i didnt even realize it, but you can get the hd2 on the tmo website for 49.99 and dont even have to pay for it now. they will break it in to 4/ 13 dollar payments added to your bill! t mobile is the shit as far as having the good prices on phones. they get quite a few good ones too, and i like that they offer no contract service too, they just have the smallest 3g footprint of the major networks. ;(

I read somewhere that GSM does not get reception well inside large buildings (apartments, office buildings, steel/concrete, etc.) whereas CDMA handles these situations much better.
