I have stop using POP3 on my TP2
I been using pop3 on my Yahoo email account(I paid for the PLUS).
I had it poll the server every 30 mins on my TP2. It seems to hang my TP2 and it gets worst day by day. It became very sluggish. I had to do hard reset 3x in about 2 months! Now my TP2 is fast and lively. I think Push technology is better. Do any of you stop using pop3 on your TP2? |
Re: I have stop using POP3 on my TP2
DO you have it saving attachments to your phone? How many emails are loaded? Sounds like a storage issue

I thought Gmail set up as pop3 by default. You have to go through the manual setup as described by Google to use IMAP.

Re: I have stop using POP3 on my TP2
On all my phones, I've used imap only, not pop. I wanted the mail pushed right away instead of polling every 5 or whatever minutes.
Although, it shouldn't bog down your phone. I have a LOT of accounts going at once and it's been fine on both the titan and tp. |
Re: I have stop using POP3 on my TP2
I use POP exclusively... maybe I shouldn't, but anyways, no problems whatsoever.
Imap "push" uses data, right, so there is no way (on CDMA/EVDO) to have imap "push" not interfere with voice. Instead I use SMS to send me my emails, that is my version of "push". Its fast, doesn't interfere with voice and is kind on the battery... a little script breaks up each email into up to 3 SMSs... |
Re: I have stop using POP3 on my TP2
I am not using Gmail. I am using Yahoo and they only do pop3 right?
I only have it download for the past 7 days. And it poll every 1 hr. It is so slow. It keep hanging my phone. I cant get to the screen. I have to do a hard reset and not doing any auto weather or stock update and my phone is FAST. You all dont have this problem doing it in pop3? |

How do you answer? Do you have to open up your email client or can you respond via the sms you sent yourself? Also, I assume you use a pop server at home or elsewhere, and then a script converts it to sms? Could you give us the details as to how it's done in case someone else might like it? With all my personal accounts and work email, I find it's better, faster and easier FOR ME to have it run as IMAP as it shows up on my phone before my work email client. Also I can reply on the run. So that works for me and haven't had any issues with connectivity. |
Re: I have stop using POP3 on my TP2
So using IMAP4 will push the emails TO the phone? why does it have a setting for how often to check email in the setup then? doesnt IMAP4 conserve battery then if its being sent to the phone rather then phone going out and looking for it like it does on POP3? thanks

Re: I have stop using POP3 on my TP2
From what I know, POP services run say, every 5 mins. They connect to a server and dl whatever is new. It can't do a lot more than that.
IMAP on the other hand, stays running on your phone and stays connected to the server just idling the time away. It's not really "querying" the server the same way POP does. So as soon as you get a email, the server sends it right over to your IMAP client and it pops up almost immediately. The main difference between the two for most people will be that you'll get almost immediate notification of new email instead of 5, 10, 15 etc min intervals. |
Re: I have stop using POP3 on my TP2
right on, i understand. I tested it out and had to set the interval to check email to 2 hours. then I tested it out, and did not receive the email through the phone for 10 minutes ( when i clicked send/receive ) manually. so I dont see it staying connected to the server all the time. any thoughts?
thanks |
Re: I have stop using POP3 on my TP2
Well, i don't know what to tell you. I get it right away with imap... since I also have my work email going to my phone, sometimes it even beats the mail client on the PC! lol

Re: I have stop using POP3 on my TP2
do you recall/could you check the check email interval setting? I dont see why imap4 would have an interval setting if it is staying idle connected, and not querying constantly. thanks in advance

Re: I have stop using POP3 on my TP2
Well, i'm using the Energy ROM first of all. And in this rom there is no option for that. I set up 1 gmail account only and set it up as IMAP.
I usually use flexmail (haven't gotten around to setting it up because I have so many email addresses) and i don't recall it having a interval to check imap either... maybe you have an option to disconnect after checking imap email? OR you have data to d/c after 5 mins of idle or something. That's the only thing i can think of. |
