pie no longer connects to internet automatically
 

When not connected to internet, I would run Pocket Internet Explorer,
type in any url, and it would automatically connect to the internet evdo.

It stopped doing that, and now just tries to go to the url without
connecting to internet - resulting in page not found.

How do I get it back to the original behavior? Is there a registry
entry or something?

Note: if I enable Data Connection in htc Comm Manager first,
pie works fine. Oddly, Opera still does connect to internet if
not currently connected.

Try rebooting your phone to get more usable RAM back. It sounds like you have a low RAM issue......

Soft reset didn't work.
