worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

I'm upgrading myself to a smart phone finally and I'm trying to decide if I should wait for a new Windows Phone 7/Android2.2 phone or the Touch Pro2.

My concern with the TP2 is the weak hardware specs and all the talks of it lagging or having to wipe and free up RAM.

I'm also interesting in using it as amy GPS, but I've been reading about how it has 30 second lags or would freeze up.

With all that said, is it better to just wait until later this year and hope that Sprint comes out with something better or pull the gun and get this slightly outdated phone that's the size of a brick?

Thanks.

I don't think it is worth it. With custom ROM they have eliminated the the lagging with the gps and the ROM. But with so many better phone on the horizon why waste your upgrade on the touch pro 2. I am personally using the 06/28/10 Plutonium Cookie Rom and I am loving it.

My friend has the EVO and she hates it because it's kind of buggy and she has to recharge it every night.

I'm just wondering if Froyo or WP7 is any better or if there's really any more life to the TP2 going past 2011. Last thing I'd want is to pay $200 for a phone that's super outdated next year.

Thanks fellow 9er fan. That's good to know that the GPS lagging has been address at least.

Re: worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

My TP2 is solid, no resets and has to be recharged every single night. I use the phone, email and other functions heavily throughout the day. Win7 or whatever name it ends up with will not for the foreseeable future support an application I use extensively throughout the day; hence, there really is no reason for me to stay with it. With that in mind, I ordered the EVO today via Sprint Telesquirt, The cost came up to: $360.69, which includes the device, car charger and screen protector. The slight problem is that the application I am using is not supported by Android, but they developer is beginning to work on supporting it.

The GPS function on my TP2 had a lag of 1 or so seconds and that is it.Overall I consider it to be an excellent device.

Which plan are you on? My SERO plan is keeping me on the TP2

stcardinal 07-01-2010 02:52 AM

Re: worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

I am on the SERO too, but I don't mind changing if there are better phone options. You think WP7 or android will ever be available for SERO users?

Re: worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

OP,

If you want to get a TP2 and not burn your upgrade, buy one used. I did. I paid less than Sprint wants for a new one on contract. I still have my upgrade for when something better comes along this fall or next spring.

Also this is my 4th smart phone and I have had to plug them all in at night to charge. I use my phone for businesss use as well so I receive email on it constantly, but its something I have just gotten used to.

Re: worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

Keep in mind if you're concerned about battery life, you will basically be on a computer and phone together, if you're expecting 3-4 day battery life you will be upset with any phone you get. As far as the TP2 is concerned, I would look to get one used, and seeing you're on Sprint, get the insurance as soon as it's activated so if there are any problems, you're covered. But be very careful when buying a used phone, make sure to check with Sprint it's not a bad ESN, etc. And going used you'll save your upgrade to see what else comes out and until then you'll have a rock solid phone that runs without issues, depending on the ROM you're using.

Re: worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

If you don't mind switching out of SERO, then you have a lot more options to pick from since TP2 is and probably will be the most advanced phone that Sprint will ever allow on SERO... Kinda sucks to think it is the dead end.... ;(... Having said that, I am quite satisfied with my TP2 compared to my old TP1. GPS problems on my TP1 is fixed on the TP2.

I also have a lot of WM applications so I like to actually stick to TP2. There are a lot of applications out there right now that don't have an Android version yet. They might in the future as Android gets more popular, but of course there's no guarantee that there will be one... I wish we have something like HD2 for Sprint, but we don't .....

If you don't mind paying at least twice what you are paying now for SERO and if you don't have a real need to stay with WM, then you probably don't want to just limit yourself to TP2.....

Re: worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

the tp2 is an awesome phone but its def. not worth locking in to an upgrade with at this point in time. youve got the evo out now, the epic before summers end, and with wp7 4 or 5 months away you will be kicking yourself if you use an upgrade on a tp2. but a tp2 used from ebay or from the bargain trader section here and hold your upgrade for a next gen handset.

Re: worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

I'm nearly in the same boat. Here is my problem. I am on SERO and won't be changing..should I just go ahead and get the HTC TP2? My contract is not up but I can get new customer pricing right now. I guess I can look at getting a used one, and keep my upgrade.
I think that even if I did get it through Sprint that the TP2 would be good enough for me for two years..any thoughts?

My boss recently returned an EVO because the battery life was so poor it really can't be considered seriously as an everyday business phone.

He also had the "screen delaminating" problem. He decided that between the very poor build quality & the atrocious battery life that he would go back to his TP2 (that easily makes it through a day on one battery) & wait for a better quality Android phone to come out.

Like what??

I am asking a serious question, not trying to argue at all.

I recently reserved a DroidX for myself & I THINK at this point that all the WM programs & apps that I use are available for Android, but I'm worried I may have forgotten something.........

Good for you, the only real thing keeping me from a EVO is $$$$$$$$ that I am lacking.

Is it worth switching out of SERO for an Android phone?

That's the eternal question I struggle with every day :)

So far, I've been holding out, the phones get better every day.

Get 'em while you can kids. Verizon has marked the TP2 as "Out of Stock". I'm thinking that might be the end of the line? Talk about a short run! And for such an excellent phone. Well, excellent before HTC frogged it... sheesh.

The gps lag for TOMTOM was address with changes in the software, some dude came out with TOMTOM Version 7.916.9192 and this addressed the lag problem. Since you said you have the Sero plan my question is what phone are you using currently? Can you live with a phone which will become outdated. Many software developers including Microsoft themselves will not come out with software for windows 6.5 anymore. What is your budget? If you are on a limited budget then I would wait and see what comes out in the fall. Maybe you might get lucky or if the continue to developing the android platform on the touch pro 2 and if they get android working completely it might be worth an upgrade on the Sero plan. But I would wait and see how things unfold before committing to upgrading right now. I sent you a thanks just because you love the 49ers. I can already tell you a classy person by the football team you support.

Re: worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

sure it will last two years and work just fine for you. the tp2 is a nice phone although a little big for me. hell people are still using moguls so tp2 should be good for awhile yet lol.

I would look at getting one after the galaxy pro comes out... thats when a lot of the tp2 holdouts will finally move over to android. should be a buyers market :)

Re: worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

Personally, I love my TP2! I've been waiting all this time, n I finally got it...

Pros against EVO:
- Cheaper buying used.
- Screen Size's just right. (I might be the only one, but think EVO's screen's too big. hard to navigate using just the thumb)
- w/ Updated WM 6.5 ROM, the Sense 2.5 is amazing (just like EVO).
- World Phone (World GSM Unlocked).

Cons:
- Slower processor (EVO runnin 2x fast w/ Snapdragon)

Re: worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

I love my TP2. That said it is already out of date due to WM. Unfortunately the developers have dropped WM due to WP coming out. Just look, most places are offering apps for "smart phones", yet they only ever make them for iPhone, android, and blackberry, WM is never even considered.

I would wait until Sprint releases the next wave of midrange android devices, which I imagine would be soon considering the moment and hero are getting long in the tooth about now.

That said, the TP2 is a fun device and there are a ton of leg ace apps out there.

Re: worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

Thanks a ton lafester. I've been waiting (not quite patiently haha) for a nice post like that..just what I wanted to hear. There are some HTC TP2s in the Bargain Trader forum that look nice..one for sub200 and one that looks pristine for 225. I can get it from Sprint for 200 but if I could get the exact same phone and not use my upgrade now..that would be nice! I could always get a free phone or semi-cheap one and sell it NIB on eBay. Ha.

This is the best advice. TP2 is a good phone, but I'm ready to leave for a new phone. I'm on Verizon waiting for the Droid X (I was considering the Incredible). There has been quite a few high end phones that were released in the last 2 months, and I'm certain there are more to come very shortly. Don't waste your upgrade.

Re: worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

I bought mine on eBay so I would not get tied into new contract. I have a good old contract. Generally not bad if you have to stay with Windows and it is Quad band. Wonder what you could get a new one for now on eBay and keep your options open.

Re: worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

I just had the same debate whether or not to upgrade from my diamond to the TP2 and I finally pulled the trigger and I couldnt be happier, its a huge step up from my little diamond. The size took some getting used to but I am very happy with it so far

EDIT: I also got mine on ebay, 250 shipped with no contract extention

WOW dell axim x50v user,i have an x51v but yea ull feel right at home with ur TP2 as it basically has the same hardware specs except higher resolution and no cf card slot,as forsoftware much newer OS 6.5.x vs 5.0 (6.1 or 6.5.x via custom ROM) i personally hated the 6.5 roms on my old x51v because it only booted with less than 10mb of RAM

Re: worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

Short answer, no.

Long answer, hell no. You would be stabbing yourself in the foot if you were to purchase the Pro 2. It is nearly a year old and the software/hardware is vastly outdated. Either hold out till the new windows phone 7 come out or upgrade to a new android today. Or... buy a Pro 2 w/out waisting your upgrade (If you want one, I'll sell you mine!!!).

Re: worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

I would say as long as your not using your upgrade to get it than ya go for it, they are going super cheap around Ebay and places like that.

Re: worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

My advice and logic:

If you are on the SERO plan, keep it. There is nothing better and probably will be nothing better than that plan. I got my cousin's TP2 when he got an EVO and I am loving it. I had a Treo 800w and it was a great phone but didn't make SERO feel like it was worth it much. Now, with the large screen, large keyboard, customizable roms, 3.5mm jack, ability to tether, USB Disk Drive mode, I'm loving it. Just get one used or new on eBay or anywhere else.

Think of it this way, you will be saving yourself $720+ dollars by staying on SERO compared to the lowest Everything Plus plan starting at $60.

How I get that number... $30 for SERO. $60 for Anytime Mobile (everything Plan). That's a difference of $30 * 24 months (2-year contract) = $720. That's excluding taxes and insurance. Good luck giving Sprint $720+ of your hard-earned money for nothing really but a flashier phone.

Re: worth Getting the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint?

don't get a touch pro2 now. it's wayyyy too late in the game. would've been a nice purchase in late 2009. The lag will drive you insane especially if you knwo what other options are out on the market. 2 minutes to load a webpage and lag when texting is unacceptable.

Get either the EVO right now, the samsung epic (android) with slideout keyboard, or wait till the holidays for windows phone 7 (which i'm expecting to be pretty awesome). Just a note about the evo... battery has been improved by latest ota update. It was having issues with draining, but the update seems to have fixed it. Check out EVO forums and you'll see it's pretty unanimous.
