Is Elephants's MMS fix the only current workaround to enable SMS with the newest mighty rom release?

Do you mean "enable MMS"? SMS works fine on MightyROM. If you're looking to enable MMS, there are links for ArcSoft CABs on Page #1 of Mighty's thread that will enable MMS.

I've never heard of "Elephant's Fix"...
